COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its final home game of the season, the Ohio State softball team (30-21 overall, 7-12 in Big Ten) defeated the Wisconsin Badgers (18-27-1 overall, 7-12 in Big Ten), 6-3 and win the series 3-2 (the teams split games yesterday with OSU winning game one, 6-0 and losing game two, 4-3). The win marks only the fifth time in school history that the Buckeyes have won at least 30 games in a season. The Buckeyes jumped out early in the first inning with four runs off two hits. Renae Weigel (So., Coldwater, Ohio) drove in a pair of runs off a single and Holly English (Fr., Akron, Ohio) drove in the other two off a double.
The Badgers rallied briefly in the top of the second with two runs but the Buckeyes answered back in the bottom of the fourth when Candace Kollen (Sr., Cerritos, Calif.), in her final home at bat, drove home a run off a single to left field to give OSU a 5-2 lead. Wisconsin tacked its final run in the top of the fifth to make the score 5-3.
The Buckeyes would get their last run in the bottom of the sixth, when in her final home at bat, Natalie Tomoguchi (Sr., Irvine, Calif.) blasted a home run over the left field wall. In the circle, Jodi Dolan (Sr., Fallon, Nev.) improved her record to 11-8 on the season with the complete game win. The victory marked the 40th of her career, which breaks the Ohio State all-time career win mark of 39 held by Genice Turley (1994-95).
Wisconsin’s Jaime Prickett took the loss. She pitched 0.2 innings and gave up four runs. The Buckeyes will hit the road for a doubleheader against Purdue, Tuesday at 2 p.m.
