Buckeyes Sweep Youngstown State, 8-0 and 6-4 – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$ COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (24-20-0 overall, 5-11 in Big Ten) swept a doubleheader over the Youngstown State Penquins (15-22-0 overall) winning game one 8-0 in five innings and game two 6-4. In game one, the Buckeyes bombed the Penquins with eight runs in five innings. Jaime Chenevey (Jr., Wooster, Ohio) led the way with a 2-for-3 performance including her second home run of the season and three RBI. Renae Weigel (So., Coldwater, Ohio) and Holly English (Fr., Akron, Ohio) also chipped in with 2-for-2 and 2-for-3 days, respectively. OSU pitcher Meaghan Robinson (Jr., Naples, Fla.) started the game but was knocked out when YSUs Chris Notareschi lined a shot back to the circle which hit Robinson above her right knee cap. Robinson would later return to the field in game two. %^$

%^$ Jodi Dolan (Sr., Fallon, Nev.) improved her record to 8-6 with four innings of shutout ball. YSUs Michelle Gonger saw her record fall to 8-11. In game two, the Buckeyes jumped out again with a 5-0 lead after the second inning and would eventually win the game by a 6-4 margin. In her first start of the season, Kelli Tom (Jr., Fullerton, Calif.) earned the win (1-0) with four innings of shutout ball. The pitcher underwent knee surgery in the fall and is near full recovery. Candace Kollen (Sr., Cerritos, Calif.) led the offense with a 2-for-4, two RBI day. Weigel and English also chipped in two more hits each. YSUs Melanie Pangallo earned the loss.%^$ %^$

%^$ The win marked the 44th in the two-year tenure of OSU head coach Linda Kalafatis which happens to tie the OSU all-time mark for most wins in the first two seasons of a coach (both Diane Thompson in 1979-80 and Gail Davenport in 1989-90). The Buckeyes will play host to Ohio University in a doubleheader tomorrow at 3 p.m.%^$
