Renae Weigel and Meaghan Robinson are excellent representatives of Ohio State softball. Weigel has had a breakthrough season, improving her batting average by over 125 points from last season while Robinson, one of the top pitchers on the team, has made an ever greater impact with her play at first base – a position she had not played in college or high school.
The Ohio State Athletic Communications Office sat down and talked with Renae and Meaghan about their respective seasons.
OSUAC: Meaghan, what’s it like playing the new position of first base?
MR: “I like it a lot. Being a new position, it’s more of a challenge but at the same time very exciting. I also like the added responsibility.”
OSUAC: What kind of pressure has the new position added.
MR: “There is no extra pressure. But it gives softball another side. Before this season, I only saw the side of pitcher. Now I am able to see the defense through playing more. “Playing in the field has also enabled me the chance to get some at bats.”
OSUAC: How has your season rated so far?
MR: “I have expected myself to play a little better than I have been. But with more time, it will probably come.
“Team wise, we are better than we have ever been. And both offensively and defensively we are coming together and it is good to see.”
OSUAC: Renae, what have you done to have such a great 1998 season?
RW: “Over the summer, I practiced a lot harder and I knew the things I had to work on. In my meetings before the season started I told the coaches I wanted to hit over .300 and they said it was a great goal but don’t be unrealistic about it. So it’s nice to prove to the coaches what I can do.”
OSUAC: What have been some of the keys to your solid offensive production?
RW: “For me, it was important that I started off good. It gave me the confidence I needed to tell myself that I can hit and if I don’t hit – knowing I will get it the next time.”
OSUAC: What are some of the other things you need to do to become a better player?
RW: “Work on my fielding more. I am not happy with it right now. If I can improve that as much as I improved my hitting, than I will be happy. “As a team, we need to be more consistent which will lead to winning more games.”
OSUAC: How has your role changed on this team after last year?
RW: “After last year, I saw how I could be more of a leader but because I was a freshman, I didn’t say much. This season, I have worked harder to come through for my teammates and they listen and respect what I have to say.”
