Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Michigan 15-10, 15-6, 15-11 – Ohio State Buckeyes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Ohio State (14-12 overall, 7-10 Big Ten) needed only one hour and 26 minutes to sweep Michigan (12-13, 4-13) behind 10 kill performances by OSU’s Rosie Snow and Dana Stearns. Snow also equalled her season high of 16 digs (vs. Purdue) while Brianne Spiers added 14. UM’s Karen Chase scored a match-high 16 kills for the Wolverines with Sarah Behnke adding 13 digs.
%^$The Buckeyes opened a 7-0 lead in game one. Michigan slowly cut the lead and tied the game at seven on a kill by Chase. Michigan took a 9-7 lead on an ace by Joanna Fielder and a kill by Chase. The game was tied at nine after a kill by Anne Botica and a UM hitting error. Consecutive kills by Botica put the Buckeyes up 11-9. A UM error was good for point 12 and a kill by Angelee Abbring put the lead at 13-9. Behnke’s kill cut the lead to 13-10, but a kill by Stearns for point set up game point which came on a Michigan attack error. The Buckeyes hit .371 for the game to .158 for Michigan.
%^$OSU got off to a 5-0 start in game two, increasing the lead to 11-2. OSU was up 14-5 and Michigan cut that lead to 14-6 before a UM error ended the game at 14-6. OSU hit .259 for the game to -.024 for the Wolverines.
%^$Michigan held a 5-1 lead in game three, but kills by Jen Flynn and Snow along with two UM errors tied the match at five. After ties at six and seven the Wolverines went up 10-7 on an ace by Behnke, an OSU error and a kill by Annie Maxwell. OSU trailed 10-8 after a UM error, but a kill by Jane Stevens put the UM lead at 11-8. A kill by OSU’s Abbring cut the lead to 11-9. Brianne Spiers was subbed in to serve and OSU scored on the next six serves to win the game with kills from Botica (3), Flynn (1), and Stearns (2), who produced the match winner. Ohio State hit .276 in game three to .123 for Michigan.
%^$Ohio State hit .300 for the match to .088 for Michigan. The Buckeyes had the edge in digs, 55 to 49 and in blocks, 9.5 to 4. Shellye Sills collected a match high seven assist blocks with Abbring adding three. Michigan did collect seven aces (three by Jane Stevens) to two for OSU.
%^$Ohio State now travels to No. 14 Michigan State for a Sunday afternoon match which will be show live on ESPN2 at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.
