Women’s Volleyball Upset No. 25 Minnesota 15-11, 15-11, 15-8 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio –
Ohio State (13-12 overall, 6-10 Big Ten), behind double-figure kills by Rosie Snow (19), Angleee Abbring (13) and Dana Stearns (12), upset 25th-ranked Minnesota (16-10, 6-9) Friday evening in St. John Arena. Minnesota’s Nicole Branagh had a match-high 18 kills and Sonja Posthuma 11 for the Gophers. The win was OSU’s third against ranked teams against 10 losses.
The Buckeyes opened a 3-1 lead in game one but Minnesota countered with two aces by Yvonne Wichert and an over pass kill by Nicole Branagh to take a 4-3 lead. Kills by Jen Flynn, Shellye Sills and Angelee Abbring and two UM errors put OSU up 8-5. OSU took an 11-8 lead on an ace serve by Carey Cavanaugh. An OSU error and a kill by Lindsey Berg cut the Buckeye lead to 11-10, but kills by Rosie Snow and Dana Stearns opened the lead to 13-10. Branagh closed the lead to 13-11 with a kill, but a kill by Snow and a UM hitting error finished the game at 15-11. OSU hit .341 in the game to .244 for Minnesota.
Down 0-1 in game two, the Golden Gophers scored four straight points on a kill by Wichert, an ace by Branagh, and kills by Posthuma and Heather Baxter to take a 4-1 lead. OSU cut the lead to 4-3 on a block by Abbring and Sills and a kill by Snow. UM scored point 5 on a block by Posthuma and Hagen, but kills by Anne Botica and an overpass kill by Stearns tied the game at five. A Stearns kill and a block by Stearns and Flynn put the Buckeyes up 7-5. An ace by Berg cut the lead to 7-6. The Buckeyes extended the lead to 10-7, but Buckeye errors cut that margin to 10-9. Two kills by Stearns and a UM error put OSU up 13-9. Minnesota closed the gap to 13-11 on two OSU hitting errors, one a block by Posthuma and Glaser. The Buckeyes countered with a block for point by Abbring and Stearns and a UM hitting error to end the game at 15-11. Ohio State hit .298 for the game to .154 for the Gophers.
Ohio State took a 1-0 lead in game three on a block by Snow and Sills. Minnesota responded with a solo block by Glaser and a kill by Posthuma for a 2-1 lead. A UM error and an ace by Snow put OSU up 3-2, but a kill by Posthuma tied the game at three. OSU scored the next four points on aces by Brianne Spiers and Botica, a kill by Flynn and a UM error to go up 7-3. OSU’s lead went to 7-4 on an OSU hitting error. A UM error and a kill by Botica put the Buckeyes up 9-4. Stephanie Hagen cut the lead to 9-5 on a kill, but an ace by Stearns put the lead at 10-5. After an OSU error put Minnesota at 10-6, a kill by Abbring made the lead, 11-6. An OSU error was good for point eight for the Gophers, but two UM errors were for OSU points putting the lead at 13-7. Minnesota made it 13-8 on a block by Branagh and Hagen, but kills by Stearns and the match winner by Snow ended the game at 15-8. The Buckeyes hit .256 for the game to .270 for the Gophers. Defensively for OSU, Jen Flynn had a match-high 13 digs with Snow and Carey Cavanaugh adding 10 each. UM’s Yvonne Wichert had 11 digs for the Gophers.
The Buckeyes hit .298 for the match to .216 for the Gophers. OSU outdug Minnesota 59 to 43 and had seven aces to five for the Gophers. Minnesota had the edge in blocks, seven to four.
