Volleyball Blocks Out Michigan 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – 21st ranked Ohio State ( 10-7 overall, 3-5 Big Ten) used a solid blocking game to defeat Michigan (10-8, 2-6) in four games. The 17-15, 15-10, 12-15, 15-10 OSU win was highlighted by career blocking performances by Jen Flynn (one solo, eight assists) and Laura Stalling (1-7), while Shellye Sills helped out with eight blocks (2-6). The Buckeyes had match high 18 team blocks to only nine for Michigan. Offensively, Rosie Snow collected a career high 29 kills (previous high of 27 vs. UCLA at Hawaii) in the win with Angelee Abbring adding 11 and Dana Stearns, 10. Stearns tied for match high honors with 14 digs with Michigan’s Sarah Behnke, while Snow chipped in 13 digs.
The Buckeye overcam a 4-2 Michigan lead to go up 8-4. Michigan responded with 11 consecutive points to take a 11-8 lead. OSU closed to 11-10 on an ace serve by Dana Stearns, but a kill by Michigan’s Behnke and an ace by Linsey Ebert put Michigan up 13-10. Stearns made it 13-11 on an overpass kill, while a UM hitting error followed by another ace by Stearns tied the game at 13. The Wolverines reach their first game point with an ace by Shannon Melka (14-13), but a Snow kill for sideout allowed the Buckeye to score on an ace by Nikki Cisco and a block by Stalling and Abbring putting OSU up 15-14 and serving for the game. Jeanine Szczesniak got the sideout with a kill and a solo block by Behnke tied the game at 15. A service error returned the ball to OSU, where a block by Stalling and Flynn set up game point at 16-15. After a series of sideouts, a kill by Steans ended the game for OSU at 17-15. The Buckeyes hit .150 for the game to .167 for Michigan.
OSU opened up 5-1 and 9-4 leads in game two. OSU was up 11-6 when Michigan rallied to close the margin to 11-10. The Buckeyes scored the next four points including a block by Flynn and Stalling for the game at 15-10. The Buckeyes hit .155 in game to to .148 for UM.
Game three saw OSU take a 9-2 lead, but allow Michigan to score nine consecutive points off five OSU errors to go up 11-9. A Snow kill closed the gap to 11-10, but Melka’s ace put the Wolverines up 12-10. The Buckeyes tied the game at 12 on consecutive blocks by Flynn and Stalling and Snow and Flynn, but two OSU hitting errors and a kill by Nicole Kacor ended the game in favor of the Wolverines, 15-12. Michigan hit .135 in the game to .079 for OSU. Game four saw the Buckeyes go up 12-6, but a four-point Michigan run closed the margin to 12-10. An ace serve by Snow, a UM hitting error and a kill by Anne Botica closed the game at 15-10 ending the match in favor of the Buckeyes. OSU hit .350 in the game to .225 for Michigan.
For the match, the Buckeyes hit .182 to .168 for Michigan. The Wolverines had the edge in digs, 60 to 56, while OSU enjoyed an 18 to nine margin in blocks and an 11 to six edge in ace serves.
The Buckeyes travel next week to face Northwestern on Friday night and Indiana on Saturday.
