%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-John Bluem, head men’s soccer coach, today announced six student-athletes will attend The Ohio State University and play soccer in the fall of 2002.%^$
%^$”This is a very good recruiting class and I look forward to their years here at Ohio State,” Bluem said. “They are all excellent students who will represent Ohio State on and off the field with class and determination.”%^$
%^$Kevin Nugent (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), Dana York (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont), Michael McCarthy (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and Raymond Burse, Jr. (Prospect, Ky./St. Xavier) signed National Letters-of-Intent during the early signing period which ended Feb. 6. Chris Tumblin (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Adam Kreinbrink (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) have signed offers of admission.%^$
%^$Kevin Nugent
%^$Recently named the Gatorade Ohio High School Player of the Year, Nugent is a 5-feet-11, 165-pound forward from Centerville, Ohio. As a senior in 2001, the captain and team MVP was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America High School All-American, the Ohio Boys’ High School Division I Player of the Year, a first team all-state (2000, ’01), all-district (2000, ’01), all-area (1999-’01) and all-league (1998-’01) selection and was the Western Ohio League Player of the Year. Nugent finished his high school career with 73 goals and 32 assists and was named Offensive MVP all four years. In 2001, he led his club team, Team Dayton ’83, to the U.S. Youth Soccer Association Under-17 National Championship title behind a 44-0-1 record and was the recipient of the adidas Golden Boot Award. Nugent also was a member of the Ohio South Olympic Development Program state team from 1997-2001. Nugent’s older brother, Mike, is a freshman place kicker on the Ohio State football team.%^$
%^$”One of our pushes this year was to recruit in Ohio and in Kevin we got the best of the best,” Bluem said. “He is a complete player with an abundance of attacking skills. We expect that he will make a significant contribution as a freshman.”%^$
%^$Dana York
%^$York is a 6-foot, 170-pound defender from Clayton, Ohio. A teammate of Nugent’s on Team Dayton ’83, winner of the U-17 national championship in 2001, York was a three-year letterwinner at Northmont High School. As a senior, York was team captain and most valuable defender and took home first team all-conference and second team all-district accolades. In 2000, York was a second-team all-district and all-area selection. York also was a member of the Ohio South State ODP squad from 1999-2000.%^$
%^$”We really needed to bring in some new defensive players and Dana will help immediately,” Bluem said. “He combines great speed and athleticism with a tremendous desire to win.”%^$
%^$Michael McCarthy
%^$McCarthy, a 6-feet-2, 170-pound defender, is one of two members of the incoming class from out of state. A three-year letterwinner at Commack High School in Commack, N.Y., McCarthy helped lead his team to the League II championship title in 1998, ’99 and 2000. He was a county finalist in 2000 and ’01 and an all-conference selection in 2001. McCarthy also was a member of several club teams, including Elwood FC Copa, which he helped lead to the 2001 Eastern New York State Championship and the 1999 New York State Cup Championship.%^$
%^$”We’re really excited to have discovered Mike at such a late date,” Bluem said. “I was able to see him play in late December, convinced him to visit and he really liked what he saw. He is a true sweeper, which is a position that we were looking to fill. He will compete with some of the veterans for the job and depending on how fast he makes the transition to Division I soccer, I think he can help us right away.”%^$
%^$Raymond Burse, Jr.
%^$Although his strength lies in net as a goalkeeper, Burse was an NSCAA High School All-American as a forward. A 6-feet-1, 185-pound keeper from St. Xavier High School in Prospect, Ky., Burse plays for the nationally-renowned Javanon Soccer Club and has been a member of the Kentucky State ODP squad since 1997. He made the regional team in 1998 and 1999 and was a national pool player in 1998.%^$
%^$”With the departure of Kerry Thompson we needed to strengthen ourselves in the goalkeeping department,” Bluem said. “Ray fits the bill for us right now. He is an excellent athlete with great potential and is very good with his feet which is a must for the modern goalkeeper. He will compete right away for playing time against our returning goalkeepers, Chad Brown and Jason Wimmert.”%^$
%^$Chris Tumblin
%^$Tumblin, at 6-foot, 180 pounds, will play in the backfield for the Buckeyes as a defender. Tumblin led his high school team, Thomas Worthington, to the 2001 Division I State Championship. He also won the state championship as a freshman and his club team, the Ambassadors, was the U-16 state champion in 1999. Tumblin also was named second team all-state as a senior.%^$
%^$”Chris is a very physical man-marker who will add depth and strength to the already strong group of Buckeye defenders,” Bluem said. “He is a proven winner.”%^$
%^$Adam Kreinbrink
%^$Kreinbrink is a 5-feet-9, 150-pound midfielder from Sylvania, Ohio. As a senior at Sylvania Northview in 2001, Kreinbrink was a third team all-state selection and he has been a member of the Ohio North ODP team for several years. He also was in the 2001 ’83 ODP regional pool and played club soccer for the Sylvania Pacesetters. Krienbrink’s older brother, Andy, was a three-year member of the Ohio State soccer team (1999-2001) and also played at midfield.%^$
%^$”Adam is very similar to his brother Andy,” Bluem said. “He is a good all-around player who can challenge for playing time in a number of positions.”%^$
