COLUMBUS, Ohio – Irina Cantos has committed to the Ohio State women’s tennis team, Melissa Schaub, Buckeye head coach, announced Wednesday. The standout from Germany, who will join the squad in Fall 2019, signed a National Letter of Intent this week.
“Irina is what we are all about here at Ohio State,” Schaub said. “From the moment I met her, I knew she was the type or person and player we want in our program and as a part of our Buckeye family. She is not only a great player but also a great person. We are extremely excited to welcome her to Ohio State and have her representing all of Buckeye Nation.”
Cantos, who has been ranked No. 1 in Germany, placed in the Top 50 in ITF Juniors (18s) and participated in the main draw of both the French Open and US Open. Cantos won three doubles ITF Juniors Grade 1 and 2 Championships (Sanxenxo G2, Pontevedra G2, J.C. Ferrero Cup G1). She won three 14s singles titles in Europe, captured five Belgian National Championships and placed in the Top 5 in Europe in 14s and 16s. Cantos reached the semifinals of the Eddie Herr ITF Juniors tournament and won a 15k doubles pro circuit championship.
Cantos is looking forward to becoming a Buckeye.
“Ohio State has everything I need and more to become the person I have always wanted to be on and off the court – the team, the coaches, the academics and the program. Everything Ohio State is and represents makes me want to be a part of it and I am so beyond ecstatic to start this journey.”
