COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference announced that Ohio State pitcher Katie Chain (So., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) has been named co-Big Ten pitcher of the week along with Iowa’s Kristi Hanks.
Chain tossed a no-hitter at Miami (Ohio) April 3, striking out nine of the 15 batters she faced before the game was called as a result of the eight run-mercy rule. Chain did not allow a single ball to be put in play to the outfield and showed no sign of slowing down if the game were to have gone the entire seven innings, striking out the side to end the game.
In game one of a doubleheader with Illinois April 6, Chain led OSU to a 5-0 win, giving up just two hits and striking out five in the complete-game effort. Chain also struck out two against Eastern Michigan April 4 while allowing a single hit in 2.2 innings of relief.
She totaled 16 strikeouts in 14.2 innings for the week.
OSU travels to Bloomington, Ind., for a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. (central)
