Buckeyes Score Late, Beat Marshall 7-6

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After ending a tough weekend series in College Park, Ohio State returned home to defend their Bill Davis Stadium and took down Marshall in comeback fashion on Tuesday evening 7-6.

This was the third win of the season against Marshall and the Buckeyes improve to 12-21 on the season.

The Thundering Herd took an early 4-0 lead as they got to freshman Gavin Bruni in the first. Fellow freshman Jake Johnson replaced Bruni on the mound, striking out two to close the inning. Trey Lipsey’s RBI groundout put Ohio State on the board, driving in a huge double from senior captain Zach Dezenzo.

Aaron Funk took the mound in the third allowing just one hit through 4.1innings. This was his best outing as a Buckeye as he allowed just one earned run while striking out four. The Buckeyes saw action in the fourth with a good-bounce triple from Kade Kern, scoring Dezenzo who secured his second double of the night closing in on the Marshall lead to 4-2.

A solo homerun from Drew Steelhammer pushed Marshall’s lead to 5-3. Wild pitches from both teams added a run for each team as Marshall led 6-3 through seven innings.

A big eighth inning for the Buckeyes gave Ohio State their first lead of the night after forcing two pitching changes from Marshall. Dezenzo was hit by a pitch and came all the way around after a big double by Trey Lipsey. Kern singled up the middle, putting Lipsey in scoring position. Tyler Pettorini followed with a sacrifice fly to score another run and Archer Brookman would then tie the game with a double inside the bag at third, scoring Kern. Brookman then scored one batter later as Mitchell Okuley reached on a throwing error and the Buckeyes had a 7-6 lead.

Ethan Hammerberg came on in the ninth and recorded his third save of the season. The game ended with Brookman gunning down a Marshall would-be base stealer.

Dezenzo and Kern led the way for Ohio State each adding two hits while Dezenzo contributed three runs to the final score and Kern adding an RBI and run.

The Buckeyes will head north this weekend as they take on the Michigan Wolverines in a huge Big Ten three-game set series beginning Friday at 4:00 p.m.
