COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State and Marshall will be meeting for the third time this season and the second in Columbus when the teams square-off Tuesday night at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes won the first meeting 15-4 on opening day on Feb. 14 and then won 14-2 on March 14 in Columbus. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. and the game will be streamed on BTN+.
The Opponent
- Marshall comes to town for a second time this season and is sporting a 16-20-1 overall record and a 5-10 mark in Conference USA play
- The Herd went 2-2 last week picking up a 10-3 win over Ohio on Tuesday and a 10-9 victory over the LA Tech Bulldogs on Friday.
- Luke Edwards homered in all four games last week and now leads Marshall with 11. He has reached base in 46 consecutive games, has an 11-game hit streak and has hit long balls in the last five contests.
- Edwards leads the team with a .355 batting average, 55 hits and 36 runs scored. All of the junior’s team-leading stats rank in the top-10 in Conference USA with the 55 hits ranking second in the league.
- Ryan Leitch has a team-best 13 doubles, which are in a tie for second in C-USA.
- Kyle Schaefer has been walked 25 times to lead Marshall and sit in the top 10 in the league
Ohio State Quick Hitters
- Ohio State has had a tough go of it lately. The Buckeyes were on the wrong end of a couple of tough-luck losses on Friday and Saturday in College Park and could use a win.
- Designated hitter Blayne Robinson was 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run in two games vs. Maryland over the weekend. He has had a hit in each of the last three games.
- Kade Kern had four hits in the series vs. the Terrapins and is batting .287 on the year. He leads the team with nine doubles and is second with 27 runs batted in.
- Senior co-captain Zach Dezenzo hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season on Saturday vs. Maryland and his next hit will the 150th of his career. He is also two home runs away from 30 in his career.
- Mitchell Okuley clubbed his second home run of the season on Friday night in College Park and had a pair of RBI in the series.
- Marcus Ernst continues to lead the team with a .474 on-base percentage ad a .361 batting average.
- On the mound, freshman lefty Gavin Bruni will be making his third start of the season. He has yet to receive a decision and has 12 strikeouts in 8.1 innings. He pitched two innings against Youngstown State on April fifth and struck out six in two innings of work. He went a season-high 3.0 innings in his last start which came in game two of a doubleheader vs. Michigan State on April 10.
- Nate Karaffa is tied for the team-lead with 15 appearances. He worked 2.1 innings of scoreless relief in two appearances last week.
- Senior closer TJ Brock last weekend vs. Maryland and worked a scoreless inning, allowing a hit and retiring the side on 11 pitches.
Against Marshall This Season
- Isaiah Coupet struck out 11 over 6.0 innings and the Buckeyes clubbed four home runs, including a grand slam from freshman Trey Lipsey in the season-opening 15-4 victory on Feb. 18. Drew Reckart was 4-for-5 with a pair of homers.
- The second game was an added game on March 14 as both teams had cancelled games from the prior weekend. The Buckeyes raced out to an 11-0 lead through six innings and went on to win 14-2. Dezenzo had three hits in the game while Marcus Ernst, Archer Brookman and Tyler Pettorini all had two hits. Wyatt Loncar started and went 5.0 scoreless innings, scattering five hits and striking out five.
- Zach Dezenzo is 4-for-6 with two doubles, two home runs and six runs batted in against the Thundering Herd this season.
- Marcus Ernst is 3-for-5 and has walked three times in the first two games.
- Drew Reckart homered twice on opening day in the 15-4 win.
- Caden Kaiser and Colton Bauer each came off the bench to collect a pair of pinch-hit knocks in the two games.
