Buckeyes in Action at Fall Ranked Spotlight

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four members of the Ohio State women’s tennis team took part in the Fall Ranked Spotlight hosted by North Carolina State. The tournament ran Thursday through Sunday, with three doubles matches per team and each player competing in five singles matches. The Thursday doubles matches were in Raleigh, with the rest of the tournament at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

Irina Cantos Siemers was the No. 6 seed in the A-1 draw and Sydni Ratliff was also in the A-1 draw. Kolie Allen and Lucia Marzal were in the A-2 draw.

Ratliff reached the semifinals of the 32-player bracket and finished the weekend 3-2. Cantos Siemers dropped her opening match but won three of her four in consolation to also end 3-2. Allen won two matches to start the tournament and advance to the quarterfinals before she fell in the 32-player A-2 draw. She was 1-1 in consolation play to end the tournament 3-2. Lucia Marzal dropped her first two matches and ended the tournament 2-3.

In doubles, Allen and Marzal were 2-0 Thursday evening and played in the C/D final Sunday, falling for a 2-1 tournament mark. Cantos Siemers and Ratliff were 1-2 in the tournament.

Sunday Singles & Doubles

In doubles, Kolie Allen and Lucia Marzal fell in the C/D championship match, while Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff posted a 6-2 win. In singles, Marzal notched a straight-set win over No. 111t-ranked Rachel Hanford of Arizona State and No. 10-ranked Irina Cantos Siemers won 6-2, 6-4, over No. 31 Reilly Tran of North Carolina. Sydni Ratliff rallied to win the second set but fell in a super tiebreaker.

Saturday Singles

Sydni Ratliff won her quarterfinal match in the A-1 draw, as they split the first sets and the Buckeye prevailed in a tiebreaker in the third. She then fell in the semifinals in straight sets to eventual champion Fiona Crawley of North Carolina. Irina Cantos Siemers was 1-1 in consolation play, with a three-set win and straight-set loss.

In the A-2 draw, Kolie Allen lost her main draw match, but posted a straight-set win in her first consolation match. Lucia Marzal was 1-1 on the day in consolation action. She won in straight sets but fell in a super tiebreaker after rallying to tie the match with a second-set victory.

Friday Singles

Sydni Ratliff and Kolie Allen were both 2-0 on day one. Ratliff, in the A-1 bracket, posted two come-from-behind three-set wins. In the A-2 bracket, Allen had a comeback victory in the opening round and straight-set win in the second. Irina Cantos Siemers dropped her opening match but posted a straight-set win in consolation in the A-1 bracket.

Thursday Doubles

The unraked tandem of Kolie Allen and Lucia Marzal was 2-0 on the day, downing a team from NC State in a tiebreaker before a 6-1 win over a tandem from Virginia. The No. 24-ranked team of Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff lost 6-4 to the No. 28 team from Oklahoma and to the No. 22 duo from Arizona State.
