COLUMBUS, Ohio – The stretch run of the 2022 lacrosse regular season begins Saturday as No. 9 Ohio State welcomes in Johns Hopkins for a key Big Ten Conference clash at Ohio Stadium. Opening faceoff is scheduled for noon with ESPNU to televise. Mike Corey and Quint Kessenich will be on the call.

Briefly on the Buckeyes
- Ohio State moved back into the top 10 of both national polls this week coming off an 18-9 triumph last Friday over Penn State. The Buckeyes are 7-3 on the year and 1-1 in the Big Ten.
- Ohio State has wins over three top-20 teams: No. 11 Harvard (7-1), No. 15 North Carolina (7-3) and No. 16 Notre Dame (3-4).
- Two of those three wins (vs. Harvard and North Carolina) came away from home.
- With an 18-goal outing last week, Ohio State’s now averaging 14.60 goals per game, good for No. 10 nationally.
- Four players have 20 or more points on offense, led by captain Jack Myers, whose 52 points ranks third in the Big Ten.
- Myers leads the Big Ten in assists per game (2.70) and is tied for first in total number of assists (27).
- Following a five-goal day vs. Penn State, Colby Smith now leads the team with 30 goals. He ranks third in the Big Ten, averaging 3.00 goals per game.
- Goalie Skylar Wahlund has started each of the last three games and on Tuesday was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week for his 11-save performance vs. Penn State.
- Ohio State ranks in the top 10 nationally in four different categories: extra-man offense (first, .647), face-off win percentage (fifth, .623), shooting percentage (fourth, .342) and man-down defense (eighth, .741).
Welcome Back Alumni
- Ohio State will welcome back its alums this weekend with a pre-game brunch at Ohio Stadium, Tunnel or Pride before the game begins and a halftime on-field recognition.
- Saturday will also serve as Buckeye Club Appreciation Day.
Poll Position
- Ohio State went back into the top of the USILA Coaches Poll this week at No. 9. The Buckeyes have spent five weeks this season ranked inside the top-10.
- Six past or future Ohio State opponents are ranked in this week’s USILA Coaches Poll.
Scouting Johns Hopkins
- The Blue Jays, under second-year head coach Peter Milliman, are 5-6 on the season and 1-1 in Big Ten play following a 12-7 loss on Sunday night at No. 3 Rutgers.
- Hopkins has wins over Jacksonville, Towson, Loyola, Syracuse and most recently two weeks ago vs. Michigan.
- Senior Joey Epstein is JHU’s leading scorer with 19 goals, 13 assists and 32 points. He’s played in 10 of Hopkins’ 11 games but did not see any action last Sunday at Rutgers.
- Five Blue Jays have registered 20 or more points thus far.
The Ohio State/Johns Hopkins Series
- Since the Big Ten era in lacrosse began in 2015, the Buckeyes have a 6-4 edge over 10 games in the series.
- In 2017 and 2018, the teams played in both the regular season and the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
- In 2017, the Buckeyes won both meetings – a 13-9 decision during the regular season at Ohio Stadium and a 15-13 victory in the Big Ten semifinals at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. In 2018, the Blue Jays won 13-10 during the regular season in Baltimore and 6-5 in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals in Ann Arbor.
- Last year, Ohio State won both games during a conference-only season: 14-8 on Feb. 20 at Homewood Field and 14-12 on April 10 at Ohio Stadium.
- Saturday will be the 16th all-time meeting between the programs with Hopkins holding a 9-6 edge in the series.
- Since they became conference foes in 2015, five of the 10 games have been decided by two goals or less.
Statistically Speaking
- Jack Myers has 163 points in his 39-game career, good for an average of 4.17 points per game.
- He currently ranks in the top 10 in program history in both points (eighth) and assists (eighth with 75).
- With a six-point outing last Friday, Jackson Reid moved into the top 10 in career points at No. 10 with 156.
- Reid’s 108 career goals is tied for sixth-highest all-time.
- The Buckeyes’ 14.6 goals-per-game average is on pace to set the program’s single-season record. The previous high came in 1966 when Ohio State averaged 13.4 goals/game.
- Only three teams in program history – 2008 (13.1), 1978 (13.3) and 1966 (13.4) – have averaged better than 13 goals per game.
- Justin Inacio’s 319 career ground balls rank second all-time, behind only Jake Withers, who scooped up 351 from 2014-17.
- Ohio State’s extra man offense continues to be ranked No. 1 nationally. The Buckeyes have 22 goals on 34 attempts, for a .647 conversion percentage.
- Six different players have an EMO goal this season, led by Jason Knox and Colby Smith, who are tied for first nationally with seven.
Offensive Balance
- A quick look at the stat sheet reveals the Buckeyes feature a balanced scoring unit through the first 10 games of the season.
- Ohio State has 10 players with seven or more points, 12 players with at least three goals and four players with four or more assists.
- In all, 17 different players have already scored at least one goal and 24 players have at least one point to their credit through 10 games.
Don’t Forget About the Defense
- The Buckeyes bring the nation’s No. 26 scoring defense into Saturday’s game.
- Last week, Ohio State held Penn State scoreless for over 25 minutes of game action – from the 13:55 mark of the second quarter until 3:10 remained in the third quarter.
- Ohio State has held five of its 10 opponents to 10 goals or less.
- Since the start of the 2018 season, Ohio State has held 24 opponents to 10 goals or less. They are 19-5 in those games.
- The Buckeyes also possess the nation’s No. 8-ranked man-down defense. They’ve killed 27-of-34 opponent extra-man opportunities.
Strength of Schedule
- To-date, the 10 opponents the Buckeyes have played have compiled a record of 47-32. That .595 opponent winning percentage ranks 14th in the nation.
- The Buckeyes’ three remaining opponents currently have a combined record of 21-10. That .677 winning percentage of future opposition gives the Buckeyes the fifth-toughest remaining schedule in the nation.
- Overall, Ohio State’s 13 regular season opponents are currently a combined 68-42. That .618 opponent winning percentage ranks as the eighth-highest in the nation.
