COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State takes to the road for the short trip to Bowling Green, Ohio, to take on the BGSU Falcons Thursday at Cochrane Stadium. First touch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the ESPN+ producing the live stream.
The Buckeyes opened the 2022 season, the 70th for the Ohio State Men’ s Soccer Program, at the annual Wolstein Classic in Columbus last week. Ohio State went 1-0-1 with a 3-0 win over Cal Poly and a 1-all draw vs. South Carolina to finish second in the four-team event.
The BASICS

- This was year 16 for the Wolstein Classic in Columbus. The event was first played in 2006 and since then, Ohio State is 17-8-7. Ohio State played South Carolina to a 1-all draw last Thursday and defeated Cal Poly, 3-0, Sunday. Ohio State finishes second in the event. Dayton posted a 2-0 record to earn the 2022 championship.
- Laurence Wootton, Nathan Demian and Luciano Pechota were named to the 2022 Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team. Wootton had a goal and an assist, Pechota recorded a pair of assists and Demian led a defense that allowed just one goal over the two games.
- The Big Ten named Wootton its Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday for his efforts in the Wolstein Classic.
- Wootton, Deylen Vellios and Owen Sullivan are the designated captains for the 2022 season.
- Dating back to the 1998 season, Ohio State is 13-2-3 in the series vs. Bowling Green. Eight of those games went to at least one overtime (4-1-3). Starting this season, overtime will no longer be played in regular-season games.
- In games played at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium since it opened in 1999, Ohio State is 125-67-33.
Six Buckeyes from the 2021 roster were named 2022 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. Samuel Buzzas, Tommy Marusic along with returners Connor DesRoches, Devyn Etling, Thomas Gilej and Peter Van Euwen were recognized. - Academically, the 2021 Buckeyes also were honored with 22 on the Academic All-Big Ten list and 24 as OSU Scholar Athletes.
- Seniors Xavier Green and Etling elected to return to the Ohio State roster for a fifth year in 2022. Green started his Ohio State career in 2018 while Etling has been with the program since 2017 when he received a medical redshirt.
- Former Ohio State head coach John Bluem has been selected to join the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame, Class of 2022. Bluem posted 206 wins over 21 seasons (1997-2017) with 10 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the College Cup Final in 2007.
- The Buckeyes are led in 2022 by two-time All-Big Ten selection Laurence Wootton, a junior from Stoke-on-Trent, England. He was named the 2021 team MVP following a 14-point, six-goal sophomore season. Owen Sullivan, a junior from Dublin, was named most improved in 2021. Keagan McLauglin, a transfer from Notre Dame, earned the Connor Senn Award, an honor named for the Ohio State walk-on who became a starter before he tragically died of a heart condition during a 2001 match at Akron.
- This fall, the Buckeyes return four of the six players with goals in 2021, led by Wootton (6), Green (4), Etling (3) and Joakim Jahnsen (1).
Ohio State is playing its fifth season under head coach Brian Maisonneuve. - Maisonneuve was associate head coach at Indiana University, guiding the team to the 2012 NCAA national title. He was a member of the Columbus Crew from 1996-2004.
Three Named to B1G Watch List
Senior Xavier Green along with juniors Laurence Wootton and Deylen Vellios were selected by the league coaches for the annual watch list, which consists of 27 players, three each from the nine league teams. Wootton, Ohio State’s MVP in 2021 and a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection, led Ohio State with six goals and 14 points as a sophomore. Green, who elected to return for a fifth season in 2022, was next with four goals and nine points a season ago. Vellios played in all 16 games on defense and helped the Buckeyes hold nine opponents to a goal or less in 2021.

The 2022 Rookies
Eight true freshmen and one transfer arrived over the summer to join Brian Maisonneuve’s fifth edition of Ohio State men’s soccer for the 2022 season. The class includes a pair of defenders, four midfielders, two forwards and one goalkeeper. Reed Davis transferred to play in Columbus from Jacksonville. To date, Luciano Pechota, Ashton Bilow, Marko Borkovic, Donny Williams and Tanner Creech have seen action during the regular season.

Maisonneuve at OSU
Head coach Brian Maisonneuve is in his fifth year as head coach of the Buckeyes. Maisonneuve came from Indiana University where he was associate head coach for the Hoosiers. As one of the top assistants in the country, Maisonneuve guided Indiana to the 2012 NCAA National Title, a NCAA runner-up finish in 2017, the 2010 Big Ten Regular-Season Title as well as the 2013 Big Ten Tournament Championship. Maisonneuve, a native of Warren, Mich., was one of the top players in Indiana soccer history, winning the Hermann Trophy in 1994. He spent nine seasons with the Columbus Crew from 1996-2004 and was a member of the United States’ 1998 World Cup team. Maisonneuve is assisted by Matt Foldesy and Travis Morris along with director of operations Corey Brueggeman.
Game One: Ohio State 1, South Carolina 1
The Buckeyes scored first on a Chris Dowling goal in the 16' but the Gamecocks got the equalizer in the 51' and the score held in the first game of the 2022 Wolstein Classic for both teams. Ohio State keeper Keagan McLaughlin stopped two of three USC shots on the night.
Game Two: Ohio State 3, Cal Poly 0
Ohio State freshmen proved to be the difference in the shutout of the Mustangs in the final game of the 2022 Wolstein Classic. Marko Borkovic and Ashton Bilow each recorded their first Ohio State goals while classmate Luciano Pechota added a pair of assists. Junior Laurence Wootton tallied his first goal of the year while adding assist in the win. Keagan McLaughlin made four saves while Ohio State’s defense allowed Cal Poly just seven total shots.
