COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State heads north to take on Michigan in a big three-game series for both teams this weekend. Friday night’s series opener will be televised on BTN. Kevin Kugler and Danan Hughes will call the action beginning at 4 p.m.
The Buckeyes need a series victory to get back in the mix for the Big Ten Tournament while the Wolverines are looking to keep pace with the top teams in the standings. The teams have been fairly even recently as the Buckeyes hold a slim 6-5 edge in the series since the start of the 2017 season. Michigan has outscored OSU 55-49 in those games. Overall, Michigan leads the all-time series 168-109-2. The series began way back in 1895.
Ohio State Quick Hitters
- Ohio State comes into the weekend at 12-21 overall and 2-8 in Big Ten play.
- Last weekend was a tough one for the Buckeyes in College Park, Md., but they rebounded with a come-from-behind victory Tuesday night vs. Marshall to take a little momentum into Ann Arbor.
- The OSU pitching staff is second in the conference and 21st in the country in strikeouts per nine innings at 10.4.
- Freshman Trey Lipsey is one of three Buckeyes hitting over .300 on the season at .310. He tops the team with a .466 on-base percentage and leads the Big Ten with seven sacrifice bunts.
- Senior co-captain Zach Dezezno had three hits in the series last weekend at Maryland, including his ninth home run of the season. He doubled twice in the win over Marshall on Tuesday, collecting his 150th career hit in the process. Dezezno is hitting .275 on the season and leads the team with 28 runs batted in.
- Sophomore Kade Kern has had a hit in 14 of his last 16 games and has raised his batting average over that time by more than .170 points. He is batting .295 with a team-high nine doubles and is tied with Dezenzo for the team-lead with 28 RBI.
- Senior Marcus Ernst’s continues to lead the team in batting at .350. He also has a team-high 28 walks and his 15 strikeouts are the fewest by the every-day starters.
- Catcher Archer Brookman is hitting .275 and has collected a hit in eight of his last 11 games. He drove in the tying run with a 2-out double in the 8th inning vs. Marshall on Tuesday and then later scored what turned out to be the winning run.
- Freshman Tyler Pettorini has made 22 starts up the middle this season and while his numbers at the plate aren’t what he’s accustomed to, he is the sixth-toughest batter in the Big Ten to strikeout at 8.5 ABs per K.
- On the mound, Isaiah Coupet leads the Big Ten and is seventh in the country in strikeouts per nine innings at 14.28. He has struck out 64 batters in 40.1 innings.
- Nate Haberthier has struck out 15 batters over his last three starts. He has allowed just 10 walks in 38.0 innings over eight starts.
- Ethan Hammerberg is tied for the team lead with 16 appearances. He picked up his team-leading third save of the season vs. Marshall on Tuesday night, striking out two in the outing. He has a total of 35 strikeouts and just six walks in 24.0 innings.
- Senior co-captain Griffan Smith has been pitching better as of late. He allowed his first earned runs of the season in his last outing but is averaging nearly a strikeout per inning and has allowed just two walks.
- Freshman Jake Johnson is tied for the team-lead in appearances out of the pen with 16 and leads the team with a 3.00 ERA in 24.0 innings. He has walked just seven batters on the year and has punched-out 27.
- Fellow freshman Jacob Gehring has made five appearances and three starts. He has yet to factor into a win but opponents are hitting just .191 against him.
- Nate Karaffa is tied with Johnson and Hammerberg with 16 appearances out of the pen. The converted infielder has struck out 23 in 18.1 innings and collected his first collegiate victory on April 19 vs. Marshall.
- Senior TJ Brock has pitched just four innings since March 18 but he has not allowed a run in any of those four appearances. He has two saves on the year and is coming off a scoreless inning vs. Maryland last Friday night where he made just 11 pitches.
The Opponent
- Michigan is 20-15 on the season and 6-3 in Big Ten play following a sweep of in-state rival Michigan State last weekend.
- The Wolverines also sweep perennial power Cal State Fullerton earlier this month and has won six of their last seven.
- Clark Elliott (.357) and Joe Stewart (.333) are the two Wolverines batting over .300 on the season. Elliott leads the team with 12 doubles and 37 runs batted in.
- Tito Flores has clubbed a team-leading 10 home runs and has drove in 34.
- As a team, Michigan is third in the conference in hits and runs scored and fourth in home runs.
- On the mound, Friday starter Connor O’Halloran has made a Big Ten leading 10 starts and has struck out 60 over 50.2 innings.
- Reliever Chase Allen is 5-0 with a 3.76 ERA in a team-high 16 appearances. He is second in the conference in walks allowed per nine innings at 2.11.
