
Buckeyes End West Coast Swing with 3-1 Loss to Gauchos

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 9 Ohio State (4-3) fell 3-1 (19-25, 15-25, 28-26, 17-25) to UC Santa Barbara (4-3) in the Battle of the Bigs Saturday in Santa Barbara, California.
After the Gauchos knocked off No. 4 Penn State a night earlier, Santa Barbara defeated its second-consecutive Top 10 team in the win over the Buckeyes.
Martin Lallemand led three Buckeyes in double-digit kills with 16. Jacob Pasteur and Samuel Clark each added 11. Noah Platfoot was tops in digs with seven while also recording 39 assists.
Set One: The Buckeyes were down 3-0 before scoring five of the next seven points to tie it at 5-all. The Gauchos rebuilt the three-point advantage at 9-6 but a 3-0 run tied it for the Buckeyes. Santa Barbara regained the advantage and led 16-12 and the Buckeyes were not able to close the gap the rest of the way, dropping the first set, 25-19. Martin Lallemand and Jacob Pasteur each had a team-high four kills. The Gauchos hit .318 while Ohio State connected at a rate of .080.

Set Two: Santa Barbara quickly got out to a 5-1 lead before an Ohio State timeout. The Gauchos increased the lead to 14-6 and were not challenged the rest of the way in a 25-15. Santa Barbara hit .556 in the second set while the Buckeyes hit .074. Lallemand had a team-leading nine kills after two sets.

Set Three: The Buckeyes got out to its first lead of the match in building a 5-2 advantage. The Ohio State lead increased to 9-5 forcing a Gauchos timeout. Ohio State kept Santa Barbara at bay until the Gauchos drew to within 18-16 before an Ohio State timeout. Santa Barbara then tied it at 22-all forcing another Buckeye timeout. The match went back and forth until the Buckeyes claimed the win after Samuel Clark, Cole Young and Pasteur gave the Buckeyes the lead a 27-26 and an ace by Clark gave the Buckeyes the 28-26 win. Lallemand led the Buckeyes after three sets with 13 kills. Clark was next with 11. Ohio State hit .276 in the third. UCSB hit .214.

Set Four: The Gauchos put the pressure on early in building an 8-3 lead before an Ohio State timeout. UCSB added to the lead to go ahead 16-11 and then closed out the match with a 25-17 win to take the match 3-1.
