COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s tandem of graduate students Ryan Terefenko and Tre Leclaire on Wednesday were named preseason All-Americans by the United State Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Terefenko is a first-team selection at defensive midfield while Leclaire made the honorable mention list at attack.
Both Terefenko and Lelcaire will be integral pieces of a Buckeye squad that is ranked No. 12 in preseason polls by both Inside Lacrosse and US Lacrosse Magazine. They are both three-time USILA All-Americans and last June were both USILA Scholar All-Americans.
Terefenko has played in 52 career games with 139 ground balls – most of any active player on the roster – to go along with 15 goals, 19 assists and 13 caused turnovers. In September, he was selected by the Halifax Thunderbirds in the second round of the National Lacrosse League Draft.
Despite having the 2020 season cut short to seven games due to COVID-19, Terefenko led the Buckeyes with 30 ground balls and had also added two goals and four assists from his shortstick defensive midfield spot. A team captain, his play helped the Buckeyes rank 11th nationally in clearing percentage (.889) and 29th in face-off win percentage (.558). Terefenko’s average of 4.29 ground balls per game was the best in the Big Ten among non face-off specialists.
Last May, Terefenko earned his degree in sport industry and is enrolled in Ohio State’s sports management graduate program.
A native of British Columbia, Leclaire is just 12 goals shy of becoming Ohio State’s all-time leading goal scorer. He’s amassed 173 career points, sixth highest in program history, on 135 goals and 38 assists. Before COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the season after seven games, Leclaire was second in the Big Ten in goals (26) and third in goals per game (3.71).
Leclaire’s made an impact from the day he stepped on campus. As a freshman, he scored 49 goals for a Buckeye team that played in the NCAA Championship Game. Over the next two seasons, he was the team’s leading scorer and top goal-producer. Among active players through the end of the 2020 season, he ranks sixth in career goals scored.
A veteran of 54 career games, Leclaire graduated in May and is enrolled in the sports management master’s degree program. In September, he was the fourth overall selection in the National Lacrosse League Draft by the San Diego Seals.
