Strong Opening Day has Buckeyes in 2nd After 36 Holes



COLUMBUS, Ohio – All five scorers were at par or better on a very good first day for the Ohio State men’s golf team at the Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve Golf Club.

The Buckeyes posted rounds of 280 and 277 and sit in second place at 19-under par. Ohio State led the field with a combined 48 birdies and was a field-best even par on the difficult par-3s.

Individually, junior Adam Wallin was 2-over through his first five holes on Monday morning. But he finished the opening round with three birdies and an eagle to post a 69. He then followed with six more birdies in the afternoon to card a 4-under 68. He is in a tie for third at 7-under par.

JonErik Alford made six birdies in his opening of 2-under 70 and he then posted a 3-under 69 with five birdies in the afternoon. He tied for 10th at 5-under par.

Maxwell Moldovan pushed his school-record to 29 career rounds in the 60s with a 3-under 69 in the morning round. He would finish the second round with an even-par 72 and is tied for 19th at 3-under par. Neal Shipley matched Moldovan but in reverse, carding rounds of 72-69. He had just three over-par holes through the first two rounds.

Jackson Chandler opened with a 1-over 73 but rebounded with a 1-under 71 and sits at even-par headed into Tuesday. Jacob Tarkany, playing as an individual, posted a pair of 76s and it 8-over par with a round to play.

The Buckeyes are just seven shots behind Northwestern who they are paired with on Tuesday. Wallin is also just a shot off the pace individually. The final round will start with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. ET.
