COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeye spirit squad is bringing home hardware once again. The contingent of cheer, dance and mascot all had impressive showings at the 2020 Universal Cheer & Dance Association College National Championships and represented The Ohio State University well.

The dance team won the 2020 D1A Jazz National Championship and claimed a silver medal in the Pom category under the direction of head coach Melissa McGhee and assistant coach Patrick Carmichael. This marks the program’s fourth title and the last time five Buckeyes will take the Universal Dance Association stage: Lexi Miehls, Megan Schmidt, Valerie Celentano, Olivia Gutentag and Adriana Pierleoni.

The Buckeyes entered the competition the defending national champions in the pom category, having won two consecutive years in 2018 and 2019. The dancers had momentum going into finals on Sunday, holding first place in the jazz division by 1.7 points and second in the pom division by .04. Ohio State dominated and claimed the jazz title after an explosive finals performance and topped the Gophers, the 2019 victors. The team was edged by the University of Tennessee for the pom championship. This is the Vols’ first championship in the category.

Brutus Buckeye, the 2019 UCA D1A Mascot National Champion, is taking home ninth place in the category this year. The mascot teams must submit a preliminary video to earn a bid for nationals and receive initial rankings. Coach Ray Sharp and the entire Brutus team also prepared a skit complete with props to bring to the championship. From the video submission, Brutus was awarded third place. An unfortunate timing deduction during the skit set Brutus back and cost him points in the competitive division. Our favorite mascot is still bringing a top-10 finish back to Columbus.

The last results of the weekend came from the cheer team, competing in the ultra-competitive D1A Co-ed category. The team worked through adversity late in the season and were still able to solidify fifth place in prelims. After an impressive finals performance, the Ohio State cheer squad is notching another top-5 finish, claiming fourth for 2020. This makes the Buckeyes the highest-scoring Big Ten team in the category. The program is hungry for more and already eager to prepare for the 2021 championship under head coach Ben Schreiber and assistant coach Siobhan St. John.
