COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s hockey’s Sophie Jaques has earned October’s Defender of the Month title, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) announced Tuesday. Jaques, who collected three weekly WCHA defenseman honors last month, earns the Buckeyes’ first conference player of the month honor of the 2022-23 season.
Jaques paced the Buckeyes with 15 points, including a team-high 10 goals and five power play goals, in the team’s nine games played in October. The graduate defenseman leads the country in goals per game (1.00) and power play goals (5).
For her first WCHA Defender of the Week honor of the season, Jaques scored a team-high three goals in the first home series of the season against St. Cloud State. She recorded two power play goals in the Buckeyes’ 6-2 game two win over the Huskies, for her first multi-goal game of the year.
The 2022 AAU James E. Sullivan Award nominee picked up her second weekly honor following Ohio State’s road sweep of Bemidji State. In the series, Jaques led the team with six points and helped hold the Beavers to just 24 shots on goal for the entire weekend. She tallied two goals in both of the Buckeyes’ games and finished with a team-high +6 in the series.
Jaques closed out the month of October with a third weekly award, as she led Ohio State with three goals in the top-ranked matchup against Minnesota. She scored the Buckeyes’ final two goals to earn the 4-4 tie with the Gophers. The Toronto, Ont. native closed out the weekend by scoring a penalty shot to help Ohio State to a shootout win over Minnesota. She also tallied eight blocked shots in the series.
Jaques was on the ice for 20 of Ohio State’s 37 goals scored in October. She led the team with 16 blocked shots to help Ohio State hold its opponents to just 19.50 shots per game.
