MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ohio State men’s volleyball team (9-10) came up short to fourth-seeded Ball State (12-7) in the quarterfinals of the MIVA Tournament, 3-1 (31-29, 25-19, 21-25, 28-26), on Saturday at Worthen Arena.
Sotiris Siapanis had a career night with 25 kills while hitting .308. Martin Lallemand added 16 kills and Samuel Clark chipped in 14 kills. Noah Platfoot and Michael Wright handed out 28 and 26 assists, respectively. Wright also tallied 10 digs to record a double-double. Ethan Talley, Clark and Siapanis had four blocks apiece.
SET 1: After starting the match with a deficit, the Cardinals pulled ahead 15-13. A kill by Jack Stevens and a BSU error tied the score at 21-all. The teams traded the next 15 points before Ball State closed the extended set on a 3-0 run for a 31-29 win.
SET 2: Ohio State called a timeout as it fell behind 13-10. The Cardinals strung together three straight points to extend their lead to 17-12. The Buckeyes went on a 4-0 sprint, which included three kills by Siapanis, to pull within one at 17-16. Ball State had five of the last six points for a 25-19 tally.
SET 3: The lead swayed from one team to the other until a 4-1 Buckeye run gave them a slight 15-13 advantage. Ohio State continued to hold Ball State at arm’s length to secure a 25-21 victory.
SET 4: The Buckeyes went up 6-2 before the Cardinals made up the difference to lock the score at 7-all. Ohio State regained its upper hand, 20-16, but Ball State tied the rally at 22-22. The teams split the next eight points before a pair of OSU errors handed the Cardinals the set, 28-26.
