COLUMBUS, Ohio – Olivia Petit’s game-winner lifted the Ohio State women’s soccer team over Maryland, 1-0, on Pink Night Thursday at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 4-6-1 overall, 2-2-0 in the Big Ten, while the Terrapins fall to 6-4-2, also 2-2-0 in conference play.

Ohio State takes on Penn State at 2 p.m. Sunday in Columbus.

QUOTE FROM THE COACH
“When you’re starving, you’re going to figure out a way to hunt and that’s what we did today,” Lori Walker-Hock, Ohio State head coach, said. “We found that killer instinct that we’ve needed. It doesn’t matter how the goals come, once they come you have to make sure that you can secure the win. The best part of the game tonight was the lift we got from our bench. Olivia Petit scoring that goal was huge and everybody off our bench added some energy and added to our capacity to finish the game off.”

MATCH SUMMARY
– Ohio State goalkeeper Bailey Kolinski made a pair of early saves to keep the Terrapins off the board. Less than seven minutes in, the Terrapins’ Alyssa Poarch broke open on the left side of the box and hit a left-footed strike toward the far post but the Buckeye junior ranged to her left, diving to deflect the shot wide. On the ensuing corner, Jlon Flippens found Poarch but Kolinski again made a diving save on the header.

– The Buckeyes took the lead in the 30th minute on Petit’s first goal of the season. Emaly Vatne found the junior with a long ball on the left wing and Petit lofted a shot from the left edge of the box just inside the right post for the 1-0 Ohio State advantage.

– Ohio State almost doubled its lead less than four minutes later when Kayla Fischer’s cross found Vatne at the center of the box but her volley was cleared off the line by a Maryland defender as the Buckeyes held a 1-0 lead at the break.
– In the 60th minute, Fischer slotted a through ball to Marissa Birzon, who split a pair of Maryland defenders, but her shot from eight yards at the center of the box narrowly flew over the crossbar.

– The Buckeyes then had two more chances late to add an insurance tally. In the 85th minute, Petit gathered outside the top of the 18-yard box and ripped a left-footed shot but Maryland goalkeeper Nicole Kwoczka lunged to make the stop. Less than a minute later, Emma Sears tracked down a long ball on the left side of the box, cut in and ripped a right-footed shot from 15 yards off the crossbar before it was cleared away.

MATCH NOTES
– Izzy Rodriguez played the full 90 minutes once again, extending her team-best consecutive minutes played streak to 2,493. Both Rodriguez and senior Marike Mousset have played every minute of the season so far.
– Kolinski and Jordan Silkowitz each played 45 minutes as the Buckeyes notched their third clean sheet of the season.
– The goal was the first of Petit’s Ohio State career after scoring 12 in two seasons at Saint Louis University.
