COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s first road test of the 2022 season is a big one, as the Buckeyes head to Chapel Hill, N.C. for a Saturday afternoon showdown against No. 4 North Carolina. Game time is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be televised on the ACC Network.

Briefly on the Buckeyes
- Ohio State moved to 2-0 on the season last Saturday with a 17-9 win over Cleveland State inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
- The Buckeyes’ success was highlighted by its performance in the face-off X, as Justin Inacio won 20-of-22 and as a team Ohio State was 26-for-28.
- Through two games, Ohio State is winning 87.7 percent of the face-off it has taken, which is No. 1 in the country.
- The man-up unit also shined on Saturday, converting 4-of-5 opportunities and is now 6-for-8 on the season (.750).
- Six different players have four or more points thus far, led by Tewaaraton Award Watch List member Jack Myers (6G, 4A, 10 points). Leading goal scorer Colby Smith, who scored five times on Saturday, has seven goals and an assist for eight points.
- The Buckeyes’ defense has allowed an average of 8.00 goals per game over the first two outings, which is second-best in the Big Ten.
- And a big part of that has been Ohio State’s man-down defense, which is yet to allow a goal in seven opponent extra-man opportunities.
Ohio State/North Carolina: The Series
- Saturday will be the 18th meeting all-time between Ohio State and North Carolina and the first since 2011.
- And when the two teams face-off this week at Dorrance Field, it will come exactly 10 years to day from the team’s last meeting, which occurred at Ohio Stadium on Feb. 19, 2011.
- In that game, the Buckeyes defeated the No. 3-ranked Tar Heels 13-8 behind a five-point showing from Logan Schuss (3G, 2A) and 5-1 third-quarter scoring run that gave Ohio State an 11-7 lead.
- While the two teams haven’t played a regular game in 10 years, they get together every fall for a scrimmage as part of the MRB Weekend.
- The weekend has traditionally included a clinic and the awarding of the Michael R. Breschi Memorial Scholarship recipient for that year.
More on the Michael R. Breschi Memorial Scholarship
- In March of 2004, Michael Breschi, the three-year-old son of than-Ohio State head coach Joe Breschi and his wife, Julie, tragically passed away.
- In his honor, the Michael R. Breschi Memorial Scholarship was established and in the years since, it’s become one of the largest memorial endowed scholarships in the Ohio State Department of Athletics.
- Each fall when the Buckeyes and Tar Heels gather, the scholarship is given to an Ohio State senior who best exemplifies the spirit of Michael.
- This year’s recipient is fifth-year senior and captain Jackson Reid, who is Ohio State’s active career leader in goals (87) and points (125).
Ohio State/North Carolina Ties
- Joe Breschi spent 11 seasons as Ohio State’s head coach, from 1998 through 2008, and had a record of 92-63.
- He led the Buckeyes to a share of the Great Western Lacrosse League title in just his second season and the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004.
- Nick Myers was a volunteer assistant for Breschi from 2002-03 and then returned as his top assistant from 2006-08.
- When Breschi accepted the head coaching job at North Carolina in the summer of 2008, Myers was elevated to head coach at Ohio State.
- On the field, Ohio State goalie Caton Johnson was the 2019 ACC Freshman of the Year for North Carolina when he started the final six games of the year and set a program freshman record with 21 saves vs. Duke.
Buckeye This and That
- The 49 ground balls that Ohio State picked up on Saturday were the second-most in a game since at least 2003. The Buckeyes had 51 vs. Delaware on March 29, 2003.
- Through two weeks, Justin Inacio is the nation’s leader in face-off win percentage (.884). He also ranks fourth in total face-offs won (38) and seventh in ground balls per game (10.00).
- The Buckeyes are 2-0 for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
- Jack Myers has multiple points in 13 consecutive games dating back to the start of the 2021 season.
- For his career, Myers has multi-points in 28 of 31 games.
Awards Tracker
- Last week, Jack Myers was among 51 players nationwide who were named to the initial Tewaaraton Award Watch List.
- Also last week, Justin Inacio and Trent DiCicco claimed weekly Big Ten honors. Inacio was the Specialist of the Week on Feb. 8 while DiCicco was the Defensive Player of the Week.
- On Tuesday, Inacio was named to the USILA Team of the Week for his 20-for-22 showing on face-offs vs. Cleveland State.
