Ohio State Improves to 22-6 and 3-1 in the B1G with Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State opened this three-game Big Ten Conference series against Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., with a 3-0 victory Friday evening. The Buckeyes improve to 3-1 in the Big Ten Conference and to 22-6 overall with its third consecutive win and its eighth win in its last nine games. Michigan State drops to 19-13 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten.

Senior Jaycee Ruberti hit a solo home run in the first inning and sophomore McKenzie Bump hit a two-run shot in the sixth inning to provide starter Lexie Handley all the runs she needed.

Handley improved to 12-3 with the complete game win, her 12th complete game of the season. She allowed just three hits while striking out six and walking just one for her sixth consecutive win.

How the runs were scored

  • Jaycee Ruberti put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard early: cranking a solo home run – the first of her career – to right field to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead after the visitor’s half of the first inning.
  • Sophomore McKenzie Bump broke open the game for the Buckeyes in the top of the sixth inning, launching a two-run home run to center field to give Ohio State a 3-0 lead. Niki Carver, who reached on a fielder’s choice, also scored on the play.

Game notes …

  • Lexie Handley, in her last six decisions is 6-0, has pitched 36.2 innings and allowed just five earned runs with 48 strikeouts and eight walks.
  • Sam Hackenbracht had a couple of singles and improved her batting average to .398.
  • Ohio State has now won 12 of the last 13 games against Michigan State dating back to the 2017 season.
