COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-16, 25-21, 27-25) to Northwestern on Friday night inside the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes drop to 14-15 overall and 7-10 in the Big Ten while the Wildcats improve to 12-17 and 3-12 in conference play.
Madison Smeathers tied her season high with 13 kills and combined it with three blocks and two digs. Gabby Gonzales added 10 digs and six kills. Jenaisya Moore tallied 12 digs, five kills and two blocks. Adria Powell chipped in five kills, four digs, two service aces and two rejections. Becca Mauer recorded 24 assists and five digs while Kylie Murr had 10 digs.
SET 1: The Wildcats used a 7-1 run to go up 12-4 early in the opening frame. The Buckeyes got back into the swing of things as a 6-1 sprint pulled them within five, 19-14. Northwestern scored five of the last six points to take the set, 25-16.
SET 2: Northwestern burned a timeout as Ohio State took a slight 13-11 lead. The Wildcats made up the difference as they tied the score at 18-all. Kills from Powell and Moore locked things up again but Northwestern widened the gap for a 25-21 victory.
SET 3: A massive block by Moore and Sandbothe forced Northwestern to call a timeout with a 14-12 edge. The Buckeyes needed a timeout of their own down 18-15. Ohio State scored six straight points to lock the rally at 21-all. The teams traded the next eight points but a pair of kills sealed the set in Northwestern’s favor, 27-25.
