COLUMBUS, Ohio— The No. 7 Ohio State women’s rowing team battled No. 8 Brown and No. 11 Princeton Saturday at Lake Carnegie in Princeton, New Jersey. It was the season-opening regatta for the Buckeyes.
The event started with the first varsity four. The Buckeyes put on a late charge but finished a second behind Brown.
In the second varsity eight, the Buckeyes went toe-to-toe with Brown for second place and edged the Bears for the No. 2 spot by two-tenths of a second. Princeton took the race with a time of 6:30.3 ahead of Ohio State (6:32.4) and Brown (6:32.6).
In the Class of 1987 Trophy race, a rivalry battle between Princeton and Brown in the first varsity eight event, the host Tigers built a quick and comfortable lead to hold off Brown. The winning time of 6:21.3 gave Princeton a three-second win. Ohio State was third, about six seconds back.
Brown was quickest to the finish line in the second varsity four event, about six seconds ahead of Princeton and seven ahead of the Buckeyes.
The day concluded with the first novice eight race, won by the Tigers with the Buckeyes and Bears battling for second. Princeton aggressively took the lead with Ohio State and Brown battling for the No. 2 spot with the Buckeyes crossing the line ahead of the Bears. Ohio State got the separation it needed over the final half of the race to finish ahead of Brown.
The Buckeyes will take on Virginia and Duke next Saturday at the Griggs Reservoir in the first of two home regattas this year. Michigan also will be on hand in the ACC/Big Ten showdown.
