
Ohio State Advances to WCHA Final Faceoff With 2-1 Win Over Bemidji State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team has advanced to the 2023 Kwik Trip WCHA Final Faceoff after defeating Bemidji State, 2-1, at the OSU Ice Rink Saturday. The Buckeyes (30-4-2, 23-4-1 WCHA) took the best-of-three series against the Beavers following a 4-1 win Friday.
How it Happened
- Freshman Sloane Matthews was quick to put the Buckeyes on the board, finding the back of the net just 2:00 into the game. Kenzie Hauswirth recovered the puck behind the Beavers’ goal line off the stick of goaltender Hannah Hogenson and dished it across the crease to Matthews. Matthews one-timed it past Hogenson to give Ohio State the lead.
- The next 54:17 of the game were scoreless. It was Jenn Gardiner who lit the lamp for Ohio State at 16:17 in the third period to extend the lead to two goals. Gabby Rosenthal and Sophie Jaques added assists on the goal.
- Ohio State netminder Amanda Thiele made 15 saves on the day. She stopped all but the last shot she faced of the day, as Bemidji State was able to score on the power play at 17:37 in the final frame.
- The Buckeyes held on to the 2-1 lead for the final 2:23 of the game.

- Sloane Matthews tallied her first goal in six games and fifth of the season on Saturday against Bemidji.
- Jenn Gardiner’s game-winning goal is her fourth of the season. She has now recorded 54 points on the year.
- Amanda Thiele is now 17-2-1 in net for the Buckeyes this season. She’s now earned a .905 save percentage in 21 games played this season.
- Saturday’s game marked the Buckeyes’ 30th win of the season. Ohio State has now won 30 games in back-to-back seasons.
