The Meets
The No. 25 Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team improved to 4-0 on the season after defeating the Cleveland State Vikings Nov. 23, 1999, 132.5-76.5. The squad travels to Muncie, Ind. to compete against the Ball State Cardinals Friday, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. The Buckeyes finish the weekend opening the Big Ten season at No. 25 Indiana with a co-ed meet Saturday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m.
Cleveland State Recap
The Buckeyes defended home waters in their last regular season meet of the 1999 year, defeating Cleveland State 132.5-76.5. Junior Brian Malich (Mason, Ohio) posted a season best with a time of 45.48 in the 100-yard freestyle. OSU divers placed first, second and third in the one- and three-meter diving events. With 284.10 points, Ryan Fillmann (Jr., Muncie, Ind.) won the one-meter dive. Freshman Chris Monson (Edmonton, Canada) notched his first win for the Buckeyes with 337.95 points in the three-meter dive.
One Of The Best
The Ohio State Buckeyes were named to the Top 25 for the week of Jan. 6, 2000 in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll. This is the 10th consecutive year the Buckeyes have been ranked in the Top 25. The team is tied with Indiana and Iowa, each scoring 14 points. Texas was ranked first with 270 points. Other Big Ten teams included No. 8 Minnesota (174), No. 9 Michigan (169), No. 16 Penn State (100), No. 23 Purdue (19) and No. 24 Wisconsin (15).
Scouting The Cardinals
The Ball State Cardinals enter the meet 3-1, coming off a win over Valparasio Dec. 11, 1999. BSU swept the competition, downing Valpo, 152-66. The Cardinals are looking to turn around their 3-7 record from the 1998 season. Ball State is under the direction of Bob Thomas who is in his 21st year of coaching. Leading the list of those trying to reverse BSU’s fortunes is Louwrens Appelcryn. The junior, who has been chosen as the team captain this season, was named the Cardinals’ Most Valuable Swimmer and received honorable mention on the Academic All-MAC Team last year after totaling team highs with 11 wins and 21 top-three showings. He set the school record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:03.63 and placed fifth – BSU’s top finish of the meet – at the Mid-American Conference Championships. OSU vs. BSU
This is the first meeting for the Buckeyes and Cardinals. OSU is 1-0 against the MAC conference this season with the win over Miami in November.
Scouting The Hoosiers
The Indiana Hoosiers finished first at the Indiana Invitational, improving to 5-0 (1-0) on the season. The Hoosiers hosted the three day event in December. The team has topped Kentucky, Iowa and Cincinnati this season. IU captured first-place at the Windy City Invitational before the Thanksgiving holiday. Entering his ninth year, the Hoosiers are under the direction of Kris Kirchner. The 1991 Big Ten Coach of the Year has lead his team to five top 20 NCAA finishes.
No. 25 OSU vs. No. 25 IU
The Buckeyes are 5-2 against the Hoosiers in the ‘90s. The two teams did not have dual meets during the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons. Indiana finished fifth and Ohio State placed seventh at the 1998-99 Big Ten Championships.
Florida: Fun In The Sun
The Buckeyes had a strong training camp in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. over the holidays. “It was a good training camp and we are excited about the rest of the season,” head coach Bill Wadley said.
Fillmann’s Land
Jr. Ryan Fillmann will return home this weekend to Muncie, Ind. Fillmann won the one-meter dive with a score of 284.10, when the Buckeyes hosted Cleveland State in the last meet of 1999. He posted his first win for the Buckeyes scoring 323.70 points in the three-meter dive against Miami (O.).
