No. 2 Ohio State Falls 2-1 to No. 1 Wisconsin in Overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a game that could not be decided in just 60 minutes, the No. 2 Ohio State women’s hockey team fell to the top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers in overtime, 2-1, Sunday in Madison, Wis. The Buckeyes are now 6-2-0 on the year and the Badgers (10-0-0) sweep the first of two regular season series between the teams.

How it Happened

Wisconsin struck first this game, with Nicole LaMantia scoring in the 14th minute for the Badgers. The Buckeyes responded less than three minutes later as Gabby Rosenthal scored the equalizer at 15:52. Jenna Buglioni and Sophie Jaques each earned assists on the goal.

Both teams went scoreless for the remainder of regulation, as the goaltenders dominated the rest of the game. Andrea Braendli made 25 saves in the game, on her way to keeping the Badgers scoreless for two entire periods.

Wisconsin’s LaMantia netted the game winning goal, and her second on the day, 1:03 into overtime to give the Badgers the victory.

Game Notes

  • Ohio State killed off three penalties in Sunday’s game to remain perfect on the penalty kill this season. The team has killed all 22 of its opponents power play opportunities on the year. For the second straight game, the Buckeyes held the Badgers scoreless in a 5-on-3 power play chance.
  • Gabby Rosenthal was the lone scorer on the weekend for Ohio State as she scored the Buckeyes’ only goal in Sunday’s matchup after scoring the team’s one goal in game one of the series. Rosenthal now leads the team with seven goals on the year.
  • With an assist on the Buckeyes’ goal against Wisconsin, Jenna Buglioni has scored a point in all eight of Ohio State’s games this season. She has recorded an assist in six contests and leads the team with eight helpers this year.
  • Andrea Braendli has hit the 2,000 save milestone for her career with 59 saves on the weekend. She has now made 2,039 saves for Ohio State. The senior made 25 saves in game two against the Badgers for 148 saves this season.
  • Paetyn Levis skated in her 100th game of her Buckeye career on Sunday against Wisconsin.  Sophie Jaques and Madison Bizal also hit the century mark in career games played this weekend, playing in game number 100 in game one of the series against the Badgers.
