No. 18 Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Notre Dame, 7-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Notre Dame broke a 3-all halftime tie, scoring two goals in both the third and fourth quarters, to upset the No. 18 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team, 7-3, Saturday in Notre Dame, Ind.
The win gives Notre Dame a share of the Great Western Lacrosse League title with Fairfield with a conference mark of 4-1. The Buckeyes fall to 3-2 in GWLL play.
The loss ends Ohio State’s season and its three-game winning streak. The Buckeyes end the year with an overall record of 9-5. The Irish improve to 6-8 on the year.
The teams ended the first and second quarters tied. Notre Dame opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game on a goal by Dan Berger. The Buckeyes’ Anthony Gilardi (So., Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) responded with an unassisted goal at 11:09. Steve Clagett regained the lead for the Irish at 9:53, before Ohio State again tied the score. Freshman Tom Randisi (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) scored for OSU with 6:31 left on the clock in the opening stanza.
In the second quarter, Clagett again scored for the Irish, but the Buckeyes’ battled back to tie the score for the third time, as Gilardi scored his team-best second goal of the day, assisted by Mike Norton (Jr., Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall), at 7:17. The Buckeyes had a number of chances in the first half, but Notre Dame goalie Stewart Crosland was solid, posting 12 saves, including seven in the first quarter.
The Irish broke away from Ohio State in the second half, scoring four consecutive goals while holding the Buckeyes scoreless. In the third, Owen Asplundh and Chris Richez scored, followed by goals by Travis Wells and Matt Malakoff in the fourth quarter for the 7-3 final.
The Buckeyes stopped all four of Notre Dame’s man-up opportunities and were unable to score on their two chances.
Tony Russo (So., Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) made six saves in goal for the Buckeyes. Crosland ended the game with 16 saves for the Irish.
