No. 17 Ohio State Wins 7-2 Over LIU for Sweep

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 17 Ohio State men's hockey team opened 2022 with a 7-2 nonconference win over Long Island University Saturday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes led 1-0 after the first period and outscored LIU 3-1 in both the second and third stanzas for the victory.
The Buckeyes have now won five games in a row and are 14-6 on the year, with a 10-3 home record. The squad swept the series vs. LIU (4-12-3), with a 6-0 win Friday.

Three of the Buckeyes' four series in January will be on the road. The squad will play at Wisconsin Friday-Saturday, host Notre Dame Jan. 14-15 and then head to Michigan State Jan. 21-22 and to Penn State Jan. 28-29.
The Buckeyes and Badgers will meet at 8 p.m. ET Friday and at 7 p.m. ET Saturday in Madison, Wis. The games will be televised by Bally Sports Wisconsin Plus, with the coverage picked up in Ohio on Bally Sports Great Lakes and streamed through BallySports.com and the Bally Sports app and Big Ten Plus (using pay-tv credentials). The Short Story
Ohio State scored the only goal of the first period, with Patrick Guzzo tallying at 10:20. LIU tied the game early in the second but Ohio State scored three before the end of the period, from Kamil Sadlocha, Mark Cheremeta and Cole McWard, for a 4-1 advantage entering the third. Jake Wise pushed the lead to 5-1 in the third, with LIU answering, but the Buckeyes tallied the final two goals for the 7-2 final. Tate Singleton and Guzzo scored in the third, with Ohio State outshooting LIU, 19-3, in the period.
Twelve Buckeyes had a point in the win, with seven posting multiple points. Freshman defenseman Mason Lohrei had a team-high three assists and points, Guzzo scored twice and Matthew Cassidy had two helpers, while McWard, Sadlocha, Cheremeta and Wise each had a goal and a helper. Ryan Snowden made 25 saves for the win, as the Buckeyes outshot the Sharks, 48-27.
How it Happened
- Patrick Guzzo tipped a shot by Mason Lohrei to put the Buckeyes on the board at 10:20 of the first period.
- Each team had 13 shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes, with Ohio State 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
- LIU tied the game just 1:15 into the second when Zack Bross scored.
- Mark Cheremeta led Kamil Sadlocha into the LIU zone and he went around the defenseman and scored for a 2-1 Ohio State lead at 7:41.
- At 12:40 Cheremeta put in the rebound of a Jake Wise shot, with Lohrei also assisting, to make it 3-1 Buckeyes.
- Freshman defenseman Cole McWard had a shot get through traffic for his first collegiate goal at 14:57, putting Ohio State ahead 4-1. Matthew Cassidy and Joe Dunlap had the assists on the tally.
- The teams combined for 27 shots in the second, with Ohio State ahead, 16-11.
- Cam Thiesing found Wise for a goal on the rush 3:41 into the third, with McWard starting the play.
- Bross notched his second of the night for LIU at 8:38 to end the Buckeye four-goal run.
- Lohrei set up Tate Singleton for a goal at 9:32, drawing the goalie to the side of the crease and finding Singleton all alone at the far post. Gustaf Westlund also assisted on the tally.
- The final goal came at 18:10, when Guzzo put in the rebound of a Cassidy shot, with Sadlocha notching the second assist.
- Shots were 19-3 in favor of the Buckeyes in the third.
- Ryan Snowden played all 60 minutes in goal for Ohio State and had 25 saves, as the Buckeyes outshot the Sharks, 48-27. Ohio State had 23 shot blocks, led by Grant Gabriele with six and James Marooney with five.
- The Buckeyes were 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and did not score on their one power play chance.

- The Buckeyes have scored three or more goals in 15 of 20 games and are averaging 3.70 goals per night. The team has held opponents to two or less goals in 14 outings and is allowing 2.20 goals per game on the year.
- Lohrei had a career-best three assists and points. He leads the Buckeyes with 17 assists and shares the point lead with Georgii Merkulov with 19 each. He was +5 in the victory.
- Guzzo had his first career two-goal game and second two-point night. He had three goals in the series vs. LIU after scoring three in his first 17 games this year.
- McWard is the 19th Buckeye to score a goal this season. It was his first career two-point night with a goal and an assist.
- Wise is on a six-game point streak, with three goals and six assists for nine points in the six games combined. He has a 6-11-17 line this year to rank third on the team in points and has four two-point games this season, including a goal and an assist in game two vs. LIU.
- Cheremeta had a second straight two-point night and his third in his last four games. He has 13 points, with five goals and eight assists, this year.
- Sadlocha had a goal and an assist for his third two-point game this season and in his career.
- Cassidy notched two assists for his first multi-point outing in the Scarlet and Gray.
- Ohio State has gone on runs of three or more goals in 12 of 20 games this season.
- The Buckeyes are outscoring opponents 39-13 in the third period and 41-13 in the third period and overtime combined this season.
- The series was the first between the Buckeyes and LIU, who is in its second year as a Division I program.
