No. 12 Ohio State Downed in MIVA Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 12 Ohio State (4-4, 0-1) fell in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opener at McKendree (4-3, 1-0) Thursday in Lebanon, Illinois.

Playing without starters Martin Lallemand and Justin Howard (injury), the Bearcats won the first two sets (25-15, 25-23) before the Buckeyes battled back to win the third, 25-21. In a close fourth, McKendree outlasted the Buckeyes, 25-22.

Sean Ryan lead the Buckeyes with 14 kills with Jacob Pasteur adding 13 and Samuel Clark finishing with 11. Noah Platfoot led the team with 38 assists and eight digs.

Set One: McKendree scored the first four points before Jacob Pasteur got the Buckeyes on the board with his first kill of the night. The Bearcats upped the lead to 11-5 before an Ohio State timeout. McKendree came out of the timeout and kept up the pressure to win the opening set of the MIVA season, 25-15. The Bearcats hit .522 while Ohio State managed a .153 hitting percentage. Sean Ryan led the Buckeyes with four kills.

Set Two: Ohio State was down 6-5 early in the second set before evening the match at 10-all behind blocks by Ethan Talley and Pasteur and a solo by Pasteur. The Buckeyes went up 12-10 on a five-consecutive points. The Bearcats countered with the next five points to take a 15-12 lead, prompting an Ohio State timeout. The Buckeyes tied it at 21-all on a McKendree error but could not get the lead in a 25-23 loss in the set two. Ryan remained in the lead for the Buckeyes with six kills after two sets.

Set Three: Ohio State built leads of 3-1 and 7-2 before a Bearcats timeout. The Buckeyes then built advantages of 11-5 and 14-7 as McKendree struggled with its serve. The Bearcats got some momentum back and closed the gap to 17-15 in favor of the Buckeyes to force an Ohio State timeout. The Buckeyes then controlled the set until McKendree made it 23-20 Buckeyes. Ohio State called timeout and closed out the set to win 25-21. Pasteur got the final kill, his team-leading 10th of the game. The Buckeyes hit .217 in the third while McKendree had a hitting percentage of .000.

Set Four: Tied 6-all, the Buckeyes took the lead and then went up 10-7 on a Bearcat service error. Ohio State held the advantage until McKendree tied the set at 13-all. The Bearcats then used a four-point run to lead 15-13 before the Buckeyes reclaimed the lead at 16-15 when the Ohio State blocking got going. The set remained tight with neither team able to build more than a one-point lead. Down 19-18, Ohio State called timeout and reclaimed the lead at 20-19 to force a McKendree timeout. The lead went back in favor of the Bearcats, 22-20. The Buckeyes called timeout and scored the next point but McKendree held on to win the match 3-1, closing it out with a 25-22 fourth-set victory.

Ohio State will stay in the Land of Lincoln to face No. 6 Lewis at 6 p.m. Saturday in Romeoville, Illinois, in the second MIVA game of the year.
