No. 11 Buckeyes Earn 3-1 Win over No. 12 USC

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 11 Ohio State men’s volleyball team (4-1) knocked off No. 12 Southern California (5-1) in the B1G/Pac-12 Challenge Saturday 3-1 (26-24, 16-25, 25-18, 25-21) at Pauley Pavilion on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles.

The Buckeyes were led by Jacob Pasteur with 17 kills. Martin Lallemand added 15 along with a team-high 13 digs. Noah Platfoot recorded 40 assists and added eight digs. Ohio State had 45 digs as a team.

Ohio State split the weekend in California at the B1G/Pac-12 Challenge, losing the opener in a five-set match vs. host UCLA Friday.

Set One: The Buckeyes and Trojans went back and forth early with neither team building more than a two-point lead until Ohio State went up 9-6 on a Justin Howard and Pasteur block that put the Buckeyes up by three. The Trojans tied it at 11-all and then took a 13-12 lead. After a timeout with USC leading 15-13, the Trojans went up 19-15, the largest lead of the set, Ohio State called timeout and then tied the game at 22-all. The Buckeyes went up 24-23 on a block by Howard and Lallemand prompting a USC timeout. The Trojans tied it at 24-all before kills by Howard and Pasteur gave Ohio State the 26-24 win. Ohio State hit .345 with Pasteur leading the way with five kills.

Set Two: The Trojans started strong, building a 7-3 lead. The Buckeyes were not able to close the gap, drawing no closer than three points, the rest of the game. USC tied the match at 1-all with a 25-16 win.

Set Three: The Buckeyes scored three-consecutive points to take a 4-2 lead and extended the advantage to 7-3 on a Pasteur kill leading to a USC timeout. The Trojans cut the lead to one in favor of the Buckeyes at 8-7 but Ohio State built the lead back up to four, 12-8, on a Lallemand kill. A USC service error and a Lallemand ace put the Buckeyes up 16-10. Pasteur then put the Buckeyes up 17-10 with a kill prompting the Trojans to call timeout. Ohio State called timeout after the Trojans got to within four (20-16). The Buckeyes then closed out the game on a Howard kill (25-18) to take a 2-1 lead. After hitting .000 in the second set, Ohio State hit .314 while holding USC to .108. After three sets, Pasteur lead the Buckeyes with 14 kills and along with Noah Platfoot, led with seven digs.

Set Four: Ohio State remained hot to start the set, building a quick 5-1 lead on back-to-back kills by Pasteur. The Trojans then scored six of the next eight points to tie it at 7-all. Ohio State then scored seven of the next nine points, including a 5-0 run, to take a 14-9 lead. After a media timeout with the Buckeyes leading 15-12, the Trojans scored four of the next five points to tie the game at 16-all. Tied at 18, consecutive kills by Lallemand, Young and Clark put the Buckeyes up 21-18. Ohio State won the match 3-1 with the 25-21 win in game four. Lallemand got the kill on match point.

Ohio State will return to Columbus for a short stay before heading back west to face Long Beach State Jan. 28 (9 p.m.) and UC Santa Barbara Jan. 29 (10 p.m.) in the Battle of the Bigs.
