COLUMBUS, Ohio – Scoring three goals in the third period, the No. 1/1 Ohio State women’s hockey team downed Bemidji State, 5-2, Sunday afternoon in Bemidji, Minn. to sweep the road series. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 6-0-0 on the year and remain unbeaten in WCHA conference play.
How it Happened
With the game tied 2-2 at 9:34 in the third period, Ohio State found itself on the power play after a Bemidji State tripping penalty. Following an OSU timeout prior to the start of the man-up opportunity, the team managed to take a 4-2 lead within 1:24 minutes of action.
It was freshman Sydney Morrow who scored just 58 seconds into the power play for Ohio State to take back the lead. The Darien, Conn. native rushed off the bench for a change and immediately connected with Sophie Jaques to send her career power play goal into the Bemidji State goal.
Jaques followed that up with a goal of her own, scoring just 26 seconds after Morrow. Kenzie Hauswirth took a shot that landed on target, but Bemidji State’s goaltender Hannah Hogenson made the stop and knocked the loose puck out of the goal crease. Jaques was on the other end of that rebound, finishing in the top left of the Beaver net with 9:02 to play in the game. Jaques added a second goal, scoring the Buckeyes’ final tally on an empty Beaver net with :02 on the clock to give the Buckeyes the 5-2 win.
Ohio State was first on the board Sunday with Emma Maltais earning credit for a goal at 18:15 in the first period. She sent a pass from behind the Bemidji State goal line and into the goal crease, where it was knocked into the net by a Beaver defenseman. The Buckeyes held the Beavers to just one shot on goal in the first period while landing 17 on target themselves.
In the second period, Riley Brengman found the back of the net for the Buckeyes at 6:34 off assists from Jenna Buglioni and Jenn Gardiner. The junior finished top shelf in the Beavers goal to extend Ohio State’s lead to 2-0.
Bemidji State added two consecutive goals – the first by Genevieve Hendrickson at 9:56 in the second period and the next by Kendra Fortin at 6:01 in the third – but were not able to get any more past Buckeye goaltender Amanda Thiele, who made eight stops on the day.
