COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team fell to No. 5 Iowa, 4-1, in its Big Ten Conference opener Friday in Iowa City, Iowa.

How it Happened

Neither team was able to break through in the first half. Ohio State edged the Hawkeyes in shots in the first frame, 3-2. In the second quarter, Iowa held the Buckeyes without a shot and added two for themselves.
On the defensive side for the Buckeyes in the first 30 minutes, Ohio State junior goalkeeper made two saves for the Buckeyes before freshman Avery Alleva came in for the second half.
Iowa scored its first two goals quickly off the start of the third and fourth quarters. The Hawkeyes' first goal was scored 23 seconds into the second half and their second goal came 28 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Iowa went on to score three goals in the fourth quarter, adding their third and fourth goals at 48:00 and 51:39, respectively.
Ohio State recorded the final goal of the game with a tally from Katie Fichtner at 53:44. Carmela Maro sent a pass across the cage into the circle and the deflected ball by an Iowa defender landed on Fichtner's stick. Fichtner sent a shot into the bottom left corner to put the Buckeyes on the board.
