Chavez named player of the year, Perry/Johnson doubles team of the year, Schaub coach of the year
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's tennis team has captured numerous Big Ten awards, the conference announced Wednesday. Teah Chavez was selected the Big Ten Player of the Year, Luciana Perry and Flora Johnson were co-winners of the inaugural Big Ten Doubles Team of the Year award and Melissa Schaub was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the fifth time.

Chavez and Perry were unanimous First Team All-Big Ten selections for the second year in a row and Perry is now a three-time honoree. Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev, Nao Nishino and Audrey Spencer were all selected Second Team All-Big Ten and Hephzibah Oluwadare was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. Megan Basil was recognized with the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for Ohio State.

Chavez is the fifth Buckeye to earn Big Ten Player of the Year honors, with seven total awards among Ohio State players. The junior has been ranked in the Top 15 all season, reaching as high as No. 2, and is currently ranked fifth. Chavez is 14-1 in dual play, going 4-1 on court one and 10-0 on court two, with a 6-1 B1G mark, and is 20-4 overall. She reached the semifinals at ITA All-Americans in the fall and was an NCAA singles qualifier. Chavez has been ranked in doubles with both Perry and Oluwadare this season. She and Oluwadare have been as high as No. 13 during the spring.

Perry, a junior, and Johnson, a freshman, have paired up for a 12-2 mark in dual matches, posting a 6-0 ledger on court one and 6-2 mark on court two, and were 8-0 in B1G matches. The duo entered the rankings Feb. 4 and have been as high as No. 30, with a current ranking of No. 32.

Schaub was also selected the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2015, '16, 17 and 21. This year, she has guided the Buckeyes to a 21-3 ledger and 12-1 Big Ten mark, winning a share of the Big Ten title and earning the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament. The Buckeyes reached the final at the ITA Team Indoor National Championship in February for the first time in program history.

Perry is the ninth Buckeye to earn three or more First Team All-Big Ten accolades. This spring she has an 11-3 record (8-0 on court one, 3-3 on court two), with a 5-1 B1G mark. She earned her third All-America accolade in the fall, the second three-time singles All-American in program history and the first to earn the honor multiple times by reaching the NCAA Round of 16. She also advanced to the semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships. Perry has been ranked in the singles Top 10 all yar, moving up to a high of No. 3, and is currently fourth. In doubles, she has been ranked with Johnson, Chavez and Spencer.

Cisse-Ignatiev, a sophomore, is 8-6 in dual matches and had a 6-2 Big Ten mark, going 2-0 on court two, 5-6 on court three and 1-0 on court four. She is 11-10 overall in singles and reached a high of No. 87 in the rankings Feb. 19. In doubles, she and Spencer are 9-3 in dual matches, with the tandem 7-2 in B1G play. Â

Nishino was on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team a season ago. This year, she is 13-5 in dual play (3-3 on court three, 9-2 on court four, 1-0 on court five), posting an 8-1 mark in the Big Ten, and leads the Buckeyes with a 27-9 mark overall. She was the ITA Midwest Regional Champion in the fall and an NCAA singles qualifier. Nishino has been ranked throughout the year, with a high of No. 44, and she and Spencer are currently ranked 82nd in doubles.

A junior, Spencer has dropped just one match this spring, with a 14-1 mark (1-0 on court three, 5-0 on court four, 7-1 on court five, 1-0 on court six). She was 5-1 in Big Ten matches and is 20-5 overall in 2025-26. Spencer has been ranked as high as No. 65 during the year in singles. In doubles, she has been ranked with Nishino and the tandem has been as high as No. 58. Â

Oluwadare was 3-1 in B1G singles matches and has a 5-4 dual match overall (1-0 on court four, 2-1 on court five, 2-3 on court six), with a 12-10 mark overall in her first collegiate season. In doubles, she and Chavez have been ranked as high as 13th after entering the rankings Feb. 4 and the duo is 7-8 in dual outings, including a 4-2 B1G ledger.

Basil, a senior from Upper Arlington, Ohio, has been a key part of the Buckeye program throughout her four-year career. A political science major, she has earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Academic All-Big Ten, ITA Scholar-Athlete and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete honors multiple times. Following graduation this spring, she is headed to the University of Miami School of Law.
