Buckeyes vs. Wolverines
- Under head coach Melissa Schaub, the Buckeyes are 9-15 against Michigan.
- Last year, the squads met three times. The Wolverines won a Big Ten match in Ann Arbor, 4-3, March 15, 2025, and a nonconference match in Columbus, 4-1, April 16, 2025. The teams then faced off in the Big Ten Tournament final April 26, 2025 in Ojai, Calif., a 4-3 Ohio State victory. The match marked the fifth consecutive year the teams played in the conference championship match.
- The Wolverines, 3-4 on the year, defeated Duke, 4-3, Sunday in their last time out. Michigan is 40th in the ITA rankings this week.
- Michigan has three ranked singles players – No. 14 Piper Charney, No. 15 Lily Jones and No. 123 Reese Miller. In doubles, Jones and Jessica Bernales are ranked 36th, with Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde No. 68.
- The Buckeyes are ranked second in the ITA rankings for the fourth week in a row.
- The squad started the season No. 13 and was No. 12 in the second poll, moving to No. 10 Jan. 28.
- Three other Big Ten teams are ranked in the Top 25 - No. 6 UCLA, No. 15 Washington and No. 17 USC.
- For the second straight ranking release, two Buckeyes are in the Top 4 of the singles rankings.
- This week, Luciana Perry is No. 3, with Teah Chavez No. 4. The duo was fourth and second, respectively, in the previous release.
- Chavez and Perry are the second and third Buckeyes to earn a spot in the singles Top 3, joining Francesca Di Lorenzo, who was as high as No. 1 in 2016 and '17.
- Nao Nishino is No. 67 in singles, with Audrey Spencer No. 102.
- In doubles, the tandem of Hephzibah Oluwadare and Chavez is No. 17 this week.
- Flora Johnson and Perry are ranked 59th, with Nishino and Spencer No. 67 and Perry and Chavez No. 69.
- Ohio State is 9-1 on the year, with the lone loss to No. 1 ranked Georgia, 4-3, in the ITA Indoor Championship final. The Buckeyes were making their first appearance in the title game at National Indoors.
- Last time out, the Buckeyes posted a 6-1 win over Michigan State in Columbus in their first outdoor match of the season.
- In dual matches, Teah Chavez and Audrey Spencer lead the Buckeyes with 7-0 ledgers and Luciana Perry is 7-1. Spencer has won her last 11 completed matches.
- Overall, Nao Nishino has a team-best 19 victories this year, Perry has 15 and Chavez and Spencer each have 13.
- As a team, the Buckeyes are 8-0 on court one this spring, with 7-1 marks on courts two and five. Court six is 7-3, court four is 6-2 and court three is 3-6.
- Seven of the nine teams the Buckeyes have faced this season were ranked in the Top 25 at the time of the match, including three in the Top 5. This week, four Buckeye opponents are in the Top 10 - No. 1 Georgia, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 9 NC State.
- Ohio State is the only Big Ten team to play two conference matches, with wins over Penn State and Michigan State. Those are the only two B1G matches across the conference so far this season. The full slate of conference action starts this weekend.
- The ITA announced Ohio State will serve as a host school for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in both 2027 and 2028. A joint host with Michigan, both schools will host opening rounds of play each year. Michigan will host the semifinals and final in 2027 and Ohio Sate will host the semifinals and final in 2028. Host schools are automatically in the 16-team tournament field.
- A Spring Break trip to California is up next for the Buckeyes, with a nonconference match at No. 16 Pepperdine at 3 p.m.ET March 11 before B1G matches at No. 6 UCLA at 3 p.m. ET March 14 and at No. 17 USC at 3 p.m. ET March 15.
- Ohio State will then return home to take on Duke at noon March 22, Rutgers at 2 p.m. March 27 and Maryland at 2 p.m. March 29. Matches are scheduled to be played outside at the Auer Tennis Complex and admission and parking are free.
