COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State heads to College Park on Thursday for its lone meeting this season with Maryland. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on FS1. Noah Reed and Steve Smith will call the action.
The game can also be heard on the Ohio State Radio Network from Learfield. Paul Keels and former Buckeye captain Ron Stokes are on the call.
- The short series between the two teams is dead even at 12-12. The total score in the 24 meetings is also very close as the Buckeyes lead by just five points (1,705 - 1,700).
- However, the XFINITY Center has not been kind to the Buckeyes. The lone win in that building came in 2021 when the only fans in the stands were cardboard cutouts. The Terrapins lead the series 7-1 inside the XFINITY Center.
- Last year, the teams split their home and home series with each winning on their home floor. Maryland jumped out to a fast start and cruised to an 83-59 victory on Dec. 4 in College Park. In the return meeting in Columbus, Bruce Thornton scored 21 of his game-high 31 in the second half to help the Buckeyes comeback for a 73-70 victory on Feb. 6.
- The Buckeyes are coming off a 92-82 setback at Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon. Thornton and Amare Bynum led the team with 18 points while Devin Royal chipped-in 16. Taison Chatman came off the bench and knocked-down all four of his three-point attempts and finished with a career-high 14 points.
- Bruce Thornton enters Thursday night just four points away from 1,900 in his career and 38 away from the Top 5 in program history. He’s averaging a career-best 19.5 ppg this season, which is fifth overall in the Big Ten. He also leads the conference in minutes per game and is seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio.
- Chatman has scored in double figures in each of the last two games off the bench as he also had 11 points in the win over Penn State last week. He has made 5-of-7 three-point attempts in his last two games. His career-high in points entering the season was four and he’s surpassed that mark five times this season.
- John Mobley Jr. has made at least one three-pointer in every game this season and is third in the Big Ten in three-pointers made (63), three-pointers per game (3.00) and three-point percentage (40.4). He has scored 180 points over the last 10 games (18.0 ppg) which is by far the best stretch of his young career.
- Maryland has had a rough go of it recently, losing the last three games by an average of over 30 points per game. The Terrapins are 1-9 in league play with their lone win coming over Penn State a little over two weeks ago. Senior transfer Pharrel Payne averaged 17.5 points in the first 10 games but hasn’t played since mid-December.
