COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 11 Ohio State men's swimming and diving team placed third at the Big Ten Championships, which concluded on Saturday night in Madison, Wis.
This is the 17th consecutive season Ohio State has placed in the top three at the conference championships. The Buckeyes collected nine medals over the course of the four-day competition and totaled 1,035.5 points. Tomas Navikonis won his third straight 200 free title and the 800 free relay team also won gold. Winning silver medals were Matt Klinge (50 free,100 fly) and Cornelius Jahn (200 back) and winning bronze medals were Tristan Jankovics (400 IM, 200 IM), the 200 free relay team and the 400 free relay team.
Jahn, Jankovics, Navikonis and Jordi Vilchez were named to the All-Big Ten First Team and Klinge was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team. Ethan Reniewicki was a Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection.
The night opened with the 200 IM. Jankovics won the bronze medal, finishing in an NCAA standard time of 1:41.49.
In the 200 IM C final, Sam Vaisburg finished fifth with a time of 1:46.38.
Mason Edmund and Isaac Fleig finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1650 free. Edmund finished in 14:52.97 and Fleig finished in 14:55.18. Both times are NCAA standards.
In the A final of the 100 free, Navikonis placed seventh, touching in an NCAA standard time of 42.42. In the B final, Rasmus Hanson (42.91) placed fourth, Evan Fentress (43.08) placed fifth, Ahmed Ismail (43.08) placed sixth and Klinge (43.46) placed eighth. Ethan Reniewicki finished eighth in the C final with a time of 43.96.
Jordi Vilchez placed fourth in the B final of the 200 fly, turning in an NCAA standard time of 1:43.71.
Cornelius Jahn won the silver medal in the 200 back, breaking his own program record with an NCAA standard time of 1:39.40. He set his previous record of 1:39.50 last season.
In the 200 back B final, Krys Gorski placed sixth with a time of 1:42.39. Joseph Roth was the winner of the C final with an NCAA cut of 1:42.11.
In the consolation final of the platform dive, Tyler Read placed fifth with a score of 273.10.
The Big Ten Championships concluded with the 400 free relay, and the Buckeyes won bronze. The relay team of Navikonis, Jahn, Hanson and Fentress finished in an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 2:48.19.
Up next for the Buckeyes are the NCAA Zone Diving Championships March 9-11 and the NCAA Championships March 25-28 in Atlanta, Ga.
