COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State heads to Iowa City on Wednesday for a key Big Ten matchup against Iowa with conference tournament seeding and an NCAA Tournament resume building opportunity on the line. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. ET and the game will televised on BTN. Cory Provus and Earl Watson will call the action.
The game can also be heard on the Ohio State Radio Network from Learfield. Paul Keels and former Buckeye captain Ron Stokes are on the call.
- The teams are tied at 9-7 in the Big Ten standings heading into Wednesday night.
- Wednesday’s meeting is the 173rd in the all-time series between Iowa and Ohio State. The series is tied, 86-86 but taking into account the NCAA vacated games, Iowa leads 84-81.
- The two teams have split the last 10 and last 20 meetings. Iowa has won three of the last four in Iowa City, with the last Buckeye win coming in 2021 with no fans in the stands.
- Last year, the teams split a pair meetings. The Buckeyes won big during the regular season, rolling past Iowa 82-65 in Columbus. But Iowa got its revenge in the Big Ten Tournament, ending the Buckeyes’ season with a 77-70 win in Indianapolis. Bruce Thornton scored 15 points in the regular season meeting and then had 24 points and nine assists in the Big Ten Tournament game.
- The Buckeyes are coming off a hard-fought 66-60 setback at No. 15 Michigan State on Sunday afternoon in East Lansing. Bruce Thornton was simply great, scoring 32 points with zero turnovers while playing the full 40 minutes. He had to shoulder the load as Devin Royal missed the game with illness and John Mobley Jr. missed the game with a hand injury. Amare Bynum also battled illness throughout the game. The Buckeyes led for 17:36 and cut a late 10-point deficit down to three points in the final 30 seconds.
- Thornton was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts in the games last week against No. 24 Wisconsin and No. 15 Michigan State. It was his second Big Ten Player of the Week honor this season and the third of his career. The last Buckeye with multiple Big Ten weekly awards in the same season was Keita Bates-Diop during his Big Ten Player of the Year season in 2018.
- Over the last three games, Thornton has averaged 29.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists per game while shooting over 54 percent from the floor. Is that any good?
- Taison Chatman has started the last three games in place of the injured Mobley and has played career-high minutes in each of the three games.
- Iowa has also played three ranked teams in its last three games and is 1-2 in those games, just like the Buckeyes. Iowa lost 78-57 at home to No. 13 Purdue, beat No. 9 Nebraska 57-52 in Iowa City before falling 84-71 at No. 24 Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon. Bennett Stirtz leads the team in scoring at 20.6 ppg and has made 67 three-pointers.
