COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team lost in overtime at No. 6 Penn State, 5-4, Saturday in Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa. The teams were tied at one after the first and the Buckeyes led 4-2 through two periods. Penn State notched the game's final three goals for the win.

The game wrapped up the weekend and regular season series between the Buckeyes (11-18-1, 7-13 B1G) and Nittany Lions (20-9-1, 12-7-1 B1G). Ohio State is 1-6-1 in overtime this year and the game was the third one-goal contest between the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions this season.

The Schedule Ahead

Next weekend, Ohio State will play two games at No. 1 Michigan State, with an 8:30 p.m. start Feb. 27 and an 8 p.m. game Feb. 28. BTN will televise the series and Ohio State Radio will carry the action.
A series vs. Notre Dame closes the regular season, with puck drop at 6:30 p.m. March 5 and March 6. The games will be on B1G+ and Ohio State Radio.

How it Happened

Ohio State's Sam Deckhut opened the scoring 5:24 into the game, collecting a loose puck and scoring from the side of the net. Sam McGinley and Thomas Weis assisted on the goal, Deckhut's first of the season.
Penn State tied the game on a power play goal at 19:05, coming in the last minute of a major advantage.
Shots were 14-6 in favor of Penn State in the first and Ohio State was 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Ohio State scored three goals in a row for a 4-1 lead in the second.
Felix Caron notched his third goal of the weekend at 3:52 on the power play for a 2-1 Buckeye advantage.
Deckhut tallied his second of the game at 5:55, tipping a Broten Sabo shot off a faceoff win in the Nittany Lion zone. Niall Crocker had the second assist on the tally.
Hard work on the penalty kill led to a shorthanded goal. James Hong set up Max Montes in front at 14:36.
Penn State made it a two-goal game at 14:36 and the teams went into the second intermission with Ohio State ahead 4-2. Ohio State led in shots, 19-9, in the second.
In the third, Penn State tallied twice in 37 seconds – on the power play at 2:10 and at even strength at 2:47 – to tie the game.
There were no goals scored the rest of the way, sending the teams to overtime.
The Buckeyes had three power play chances in the third, including one to close out regulation that carried into overtime, and outshot Penn State 11-6 in the third.
In overtime, the Buckeyes hit the crossbar and had one shot on goal. Penn State notched the gamewinner at 2:40 on its only shot on goal of the overtime.
Ohio State outshot Penn State in the game, 37-30. Buckeye goalie Kristoffer Eberly had 25 saves in 62:22.
The Buckeyes were 1-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-6 on the penalty kill in the game.
Sam McGinley led the Buckeyes with three shot blocks and Montes had two. Ohio State had 11 blocks as a team and Penn State blocked 16 Ohio State attempts.

Deckhut had his third career two-goal game and first since Nov. 1, 2024 vs. Lake Superior State.

Montes shares the team lead with 12 goals. The tally was the first shorthanded goal of his career and the Buckeyes' first this season.
