COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State hits the road this Sunday with a big opportunity for a resume win as the Buckeyes take on No. 15 Michigan State in East Lansing. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. and the game will televised on CBS. Kevin Harlan and Robbie Hummel will call the action.
The game can also be heard on the Ohio State Radio Network from Learfield. Paul Keels and former Buckeye captain Ron Stokes are on the call.
- Sunday’s game will be the lone scheduled game this season between the two teams. Overall, this will be the 145th all-time meeting and the Spartans officially own the all-time series lead at 76-61 after taking into account vacated games.
- Recently, the teams have split the last eight meetings and the overall score in those games is also very close, with the Buckeyes leading by just three points, 535-532.
- Last year’s lone meeting was won by the Spartans 69-62 at the Schottenstein Center on Jan. 3. The game featured runs back and forth with the Spartans having the final push. Micah Parrish led the Buckeyes with 13 points while Bruce Thornton chipped-in 10. MSU led by as many as 14 points early in the second half before Ohio State came all the way back to take a brief 50-49 lead.
- The Buckeyes are coming off perhaps their most complete game of the season as they led by double digits for the majority of the game in an 86-69 win over No. 24 Wisconsin. Bruce Thornton had one of the best games of his career, scoring 27 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out eight assists. Devin Royal had the hot hand early and would tie his career-high with four three-pointers en route to 25 points.
- Bruce Thornton is really good. He hit a couple milestones last game and is close to a couple more. The Fairburn, Ga., native surpassed 2,000 career points and also passed William Buford and some guy named Jerry Lucas on the school’s all-time scoring list. He’s also six points away from passing Herb Williams to move into second place all-time.
- Thornton, who was named to the Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Men’s College Player of the Year Late-Season Team, is one of just six Big Ten players to reach 2,000 points and 500 assists. He’s just 25 rebounds away from becoming only the second Big Ten player with 2,000 points, 500 assists and 500 rebounds.
- Freshman Amare Bynum has made 10 of 13 shots over the last two games, including 6-of-8 from long range. He’s also grabbed 12 rebounds and has three steals.
- Michigan State has had an interesting last two games. The Spartans were thumped on the road at Wisconsin but the returned home to thump UCLA last Tuesday. MSU is 21-5 overall and one of the best rebounding teams in the country at +12.5 rebounds per game.
