Buckeyes return to Columbus to face Notre Dame, Dayton Feb. 22
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 2 Ohio State was downed by No. 7 Texas 4-2 in the finals of the ITA Indoor Team National Championship in Dallas at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex at SMU.
The Buckeyes defeated the Longhorns 4-1 in Columbus Jan. 30 before meeting again Tuesday.
Ohio State advanced to the finals after wins against SMU (4-3), Stanford (4-3) and Virginia (4-2) before being defeated by the Longhorns. Ohio State is now 3-5 in the finals at the event.
The Buckeyes dropped the doubles points after losses on courts two and three before tying it up after a Jack Anthrop singles win. The match remained tied at 2-all until the Longhorns won in singles on courts six and two to clinch the victory.
The Buckeyes move to 10-1 on the season and will host Notre Dame and Dayton Feb. 22 at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center. The Fighting Irish will come to Columbus at noon followed by the Flyers at 5 p.m.

- All three doubles bouts were rematches from the Buckeyes and Longhorns match in January.
- In an historic showing, all three matches reached tiebreakers.
- On court two, Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin found themselves down 4-2. The doubles pair managed to win three-consecutive games before the Longhorns tied it up 6-all. In an intense tiebreaker, Carpico and Filin battled back from down 5-2 to make it 6-5 before falling to the Longhorns. The Buckeye pair was defeated for the first time in the dual season.
- Aidan Kim and Bryce Nakashima remained close with each pair undefeated on their serve. The match reached a 6-all tiebreaker where the Longhorns No. 27-ranked pair of Sebastian Eriksson and Oliver Ojakaar defeated Ohio State in a 7-3 tiebreaker, clinching the doubles point for Texas.
- On court three, the Buckeye duo of Alexander Bernard and Alex Okonkwo got up to a 3-1 lead before the Longhorns battled back to mark the third doubles tiebreaker of the match. Bernard and Okonkwo again jumped to a quick 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker and ended the match up 6-5 when the Longhorns clinched the doubles point on court three.
- Despite all three Ohio State doubles teams holding a matchpoint, the Buckeyes dropped the doubles point for the second time this season.
- All three courts had Ohio State matchpoints
- The doubles matches lasted over 45 minutes, the longest doubles point for the Buckeyes this season.
- The Buckeyes got out to a lead in singles with courts two, three, four and five gaining a first set victory.
- Ohio State grabbed the first singles point on court three with Jack Anthrop earning a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the Longhorns Abel Forger. The win marked an undefeated streak of four singles wins in the tournament for Anthrop.
- With the match tied at 1-all, No. 10 Sebastian Gorzny defeated No. 13 Aidan Kim in two sets for the second time this season, lifting the Longhorns to a 2-1 lead.
- Alex Okonkwo, in his first singles match of the tournament and fourth on the year, won a tiebreaker in set one and dominated in a 6-2 set two win.
- On court six, after winning the first set 6-1, Nikita Filin dropped back-to-back sets to put Texas up 3-2. Filin came into the match today with an undefeated 5-0 match record before dropping a singles and doubles match against the Longhorns.
- Texas needed one more singles victory to clinch a championship and got it on court two. Preston Stearns was defeated by Longhorn Kalin Ivanovski in a close 7-5, 6-4 match, clinching the win for Texas.
- On court five, Bryce Nakashima battled to a quick 6-2 victory in set one and dropped a 6-3 set two. In the deciding third set, it was tied 2-all before the Longhorns clinched the match.
