Buckeyes Dominate Michigan on Day 1 of Barbara Nicklaus Cup

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a unique combined men’s and women’s match play event, Ohio State claimed three wins and has 15.5 total points through two matches of the Barbara Nicklaus Cup at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
The women’s team won both of their matches against Charlotte and Michigan while the men rebounded from a morning loss to Charlotte to dominate Michigan in the afternoon. Combined, the Buckeyes have 15.5 points, which is two points ahead of Charlotte and four points in front of Clemson.
The final match against Clemson will begin at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. Admission is free for the match.
The women’s team was led by Mandy Song, Sophie Eppelstun and Nellie Ong as all three won both of their matches on Monday. Song won 3&2 in the morning and 4&2 in the afternoon vs. Vanessa Zhang of Michigan. Eppelstun played just six holes in the morning, winning five of them against Gracie Song before Song retired due to injury. She then kept playing well in a 5&3 win over Guia Acutis in the afternoon. Ong claimed a 3-up win in match one and dominated Thomasine Bartholdson 5&4 in the afternoon.
Matilde Santilli halved her morning match and then had a clutch up-and-down on No. 18 to win her match with Amanda Revuelta 1-up. Freshman Amalie Tauer went 1-1 on the day.
For the men, Jack Vojtko and Vaughn Harber each went 2-0 on the day. Vojtko beat Charlotte’s Frazer Jones 2-up in the morning and then downed Michigan’s RJ Arone 3&2 in the afternoon. Harber was 1-under in his morning 6&4 win over Charlotte’s Daniel Boone and then won 2-up vs. Dean Muratore in the afternoon.
Timotej Formanek made three birdies and was even-par through 14 holes in his big 6&4 win over Spencer Shropshire of Michigan. That was followed shortly after by a 1-up win from Giedrius Mackelis who made a clutch par putt to win the match on the 18th hole over Jordan Hwang. After a tough morning loss, Tyler Sabo capped his day with 3&2 win over Nilay Naik, making four consecutive birdies on the back nine.
