COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women's hockey team earned its fifth shutout of the season with a 4-0 win over No. 15 St. Cloud State Friday night at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Short Story
The Buckeyes (18-3-0, 12-3-0 WCHA) scored one goal in the first and second periods and added two in the third for their third straight game scoring at least four goals. Eight players recorded a point in the win and the team outshot the Huskies (7-13-1, 3-11-1 WCHA) in every period.
Ohio State goaltender Hailey MacLeod made 23 saves Friday night to hold St. Cloud State off the board in the Buckeyes' first conference game in over a month.
The team went 6-for-6 on the penalty kill and finished over 50 percent from the faceoff dot.
How it Happened
- Hilda Svensson put the Buckeyes in the lead at 12:25 in the first period. A wide shot by St. Cloud State landed on the stick of Svensson who skated the length of the ice and sent a shot over the shoulder of Husky goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö.
- The Buckeyes killed off two penalties in the opening frame and MacLeod stopped eight shots.
- Jordan Baxter doubled the Ohio State advantage at 6:08 in the second period, scoring from the top of the faceoff circle off assists from Mira Jungåker and Kassidy Carmichael.
- MacLeod added another nine saves in the middle frame as the Buckeyes took the 2-0 lead into the second intermission.
- Three minutes into the third period, Sanni Vanhanen recovered the puck behind the St. Cloud State goal and skated it around the faceoff circle and sent a wrister past Kyrkkö for her 11th goal of the season. Maxine Cimoroni earned the assist on the goal.
- The fourth goal of the game was Jordyn Petrie's fourth goal of the season. A faceoff win by Jocelyn Amos found Petrie at the top of the crease. The Lincoln, Neb. native's first shot was saved, but she lit the lamp on the rebound.
- MacLeod stopped another six shots in the final frame to hold St. Cloud State scoreless for just the second time this season.
Game Notes
- Svensson has now recorded a point in seven straight games for the Buckeyes. Her seven-game point streak ties for the longest of the season by a Buckeye, which she previously did from Oct. 24 to Nov. 21. The point is her 38th of the season, tying her for eighth most by a Buckeye in their rookie season.
- Amos tallied her 100th career point with an assist on the fourth goal of the game. The assist came off a faceoff win by Amos. The junior forward is the 21st player in program history to record 100 career points.
- The shutout is Hailey MacLeod's third of the season. The senior from Abbotsford, B.C. improves to 12-2-0 this year for the Buckeyes. Her 12 wins are her most in a season in her four-year collegiate career.
