Strong Start Pushes No. 2 Buckeyes Past No. 9 Bulldogs

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A four-goal first period powered the No. 2 Ohio State women's hockey team to a 6-2 win over No. 9 Minnesota Duluth Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink.
The result is the third victory of the season for the Buckeyes (24-3-0, 18-3-0 WCHA) over the Bulldogs (13-11-3, 9-9-3 WCHA) with the regular season finale set for 3 p.m. Saturday.
Short Story
Ohio State, with only 13 available skaters, tallied four goals in the opening period and finished the game with with a four-goal advantage over the Bulldogs. Jocelyn Amos tallied a hat trick and finished the game with a team-high four points.
The teams were even at 34 shots apiece in the game, but Buckeye netminder Hailey MacLeod earned the win with a season-high 32 saves against the Bulldogs.
In a game with 15 penalties, Ohio State's power play finished 2-for-4 and the penalty kill went 7-for-8 on the day.

How it Happened
- Already playing with a short bench, the Buckeyes went on the penalty kill 2:41 into the game. The Bulldogs' power play was neutralized by a major penalty for elbowing a minute and a half later.
- Ohio State scored twice on the five-minute power play, starting with Amos' first goal of the game at 5:51. A rebounded shot landed by Emma Peschel landed right on the stick of Amos, who was wide open in front of the Minnesota Duluth goal to send the puck past goaltender Eve Gascon.
- Sloane Matthews added her second goal in as many games with a power play goal at 8:10, also off a rebounded shot. This time the shot came from Amos and the rebound found Matthews on the back post.
- The Buckeyes continued to strengthen their lead with a goal just 11 seconds after the power play expired. Kassidy Carmichel recorded her eighth goal of the season at 9:24 in the first period off a shot from the faceoff circle that went off the glove of Gascon.
- The fourth and final goal of the first period went to Jordan Baxter, her fourth of the season. She received a pass from Brooke Disher at the top of the Bulldogs' zone and skated it in herself and sent a shot past a defender and Gascon with 1:41 on the clock.
- Both teams scored a goal in the second and third periods. Minnesota Duluth's first goal of the game came at 11:28 in the second period from Grace Sadura and its second goal was tallied on the power play by Rae Mayer at 12:31 in the third.
- Jocelyn Amos completed the hat trick with a goal at 15:07 in the second and 3:05 in the third.
- The Bulldogs outshot the Buckeyes in the second and third periods, but MacLeod stopped 25 shots in the final 40 minutes of play to hold them off.
- Amos tallied her first hat trick of the season with the first, fifth and sixth goals of the game. She recorded four points, a career-high tying performance, for the first time in over a year. Amos now has four four-point games in her career.
- MacLeod improves to 14-2-0 on the year with her second victory against Minnesota Duluth this season.
- Maxine Cimoroni recorded a career-high three points and assists in the game one win over the Bulldogs.
