No. 6 Ohio State Tops No. 5 Texas for First Ranked Win of the Season

Buckeyes host No. 1 Wake Forest at Ty Tucker Tennis Center Sunday at 2 p.m.
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 6 Ohio State hosted No. 5 Texas for its first ranked opponent of the season, defeating the Longhorns 4-1.
In front of a sold out crowd, the Buckeyes improved to 5-0 on the season.
Ohio State and Texas remained close in doubles. After a 1-1 match tie, Alexander Bernard and Alex Okonkwo clinched in a 7-5 battle. They didn't let Texas get any momentum at the start of singles, which was key. They clinched the team victory at 4-1.
Nikita Filin led the Buckeyes with a doubles and singles victory on the day. Filin won 6-1, 6-3 to clinch an Ohio State win. Â
The Buckeyes remain undefeated at home against the Longhorns and improve their all-time record to 12-10.

The doubles matches were tight with each court tied at 3-3 through six games.

Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin pulled away on court two, winning three straight games for a 6-3 win.

Alexander Bernard and Alex Okonkwo clinched it for the Buckeyes in an exciting 7-5 match, Bernard and Okonkwo are a perfect 4-0 on the season.

Aidan Kim and Bryce Nakashima suffered their first loss of the season in a close 6-4 contest on court three.

Jack Anthrop, Nikita Filin and Preston Stearns all got out to fast starts with 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1 wins in the first set, respectively.

Preston Stearns was the first to secure a singles win on court two after winning the first set 6-1 and leading the second set 1-0 before Longhorns Kalin Ivanowski retired.

The Longhorns gained a point on court one when Aidan Kim fell to Texas senior Sebastian Gorzny.

Byers grabbed the second singles point against Longhorns Lucas Brown in a 6-3, 6-4 win. Byers is a perfect 4-0 in singles on the season with all four wins coming on court six.

Filin dominated the first set 6-1 and cruised past the second set 6-3 to clinch the victory over Texas.
