Buckeyes post shutout in season opener
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team opened its season with a 4-0 victory over Iowa Monday in the ITA Kickoff Weekend championship match in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center in Columbus.

The Buckeyes were the site's No. 1 seed and earned a bye into the championship match after Georgia Tech withdrew, while Iowa (3-2) defeated UC Santa Barbara in the first round Saturday. The final match was delayed a day because of inclement weather in Columbus. The ITA Indoor National Team Championship will be held Feb. 6-9 in Evanston and Champaign, Ill.

Against the Hawkeyes, the Buckeyes opened with the doubles point and posted three straight-set singles victories for the win. Buckeye freshman Flora Johnson clinched the team victory in her first collegiate dual match. Her classmate Hephzibah Oluwadare paired with Teah Chavez for a doubles win. Audrey Spencer and Nao Nishino teamed up for a doubles win and both were victorious in singles.

How it Happened
- In doubles on court one, the duo of freshman Hephzibah Oluwadare and junior Teah Chavez jumped out to a 4-0 lead en route to a 6-3 victory.
- The tandem of sophomore Nao Nishino and junior Audrey Spencer clinched the doubles point, breaking for a 6-4 win on court three.
- The court two, the Buckeye duo of juniors Luciana Perry and Alessia Cau was down 4-5 when the doubles point was clinched.
- In singles, Spencer dropped just one game on court five to defeat Nikita Vishwase, 6-0, 6-1, and put the Buckeyes up 2-0.
- Nishino followed with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court three against Emma Tothová.
- A court six win from freshman Flora Johnson sealed the Buckeye victory. She shut out Sally Xu in the first set and then took the second, 6-3, winning the final three games. Â
- The remaining matches were abandoned. Perry rallied to win her first set and was up 4-2 in the second on court one. On court two, Chavez dropped the opening set, 7-5, and was on serve in the second, 2-1. On court four, Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev was up a set but down a break in the second.
The Schedule Ahead
- Ohio State will host No. 14 Virginia at 11 a.m. Sunday.
- The Buckeyes will then be back home to take on No. 11 NC State at 6 p.m. Feb. 13.
- Admission and parking are free for all regular season matches in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
