Ohio State heads to Penn Sunday
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State fencing programs returned to action in the St. John's Super Cup Sunday in Queens, N.Y., an event featuring many of the nation's top teams. The Buckeye men were 1-4, with a victory over No. 1 Notre Dame, while the women dropped their five team matches.
The No. 5-ranked men opened the day with a 14-13 defeat of the top-ranked Irish, led by outstanding performances from foil and epee. The Buckeyes were clipped by No. 4 Princeton to end the day, 14-13. Ohio State fell 15-12 to No. 3 Harvard, 17-10 to No. 2 Columbia and 23-4 vs. No. 6 St. John's.
Foilist Albert Bagdány led the Buckeye men with nine wins, while Solin Li was 8-1 in foil. Viktor Kulcsar and Jakob Stange each had seven wins in men's epee and James Schardine was first for men's sabre with three victories. The foil and epee squads were both 3-2 on the day.
The women, ranked seventh, lost to No. 1 Columbia and No. 13 St. John's, 17-10, and dropped their match against No. 3 Princeton, 18-7, along with 21-6 losses to No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 4 Harvard.
Natalia Botello of the sabre squad led the Buckeye women with eight wins Saturday. In women's foil Raiyan Moradi-Bidhendi was first with five wins and Masha Cojocari notched four victories. In women's epee, Gloria Klughardt and Marie-Frederique Millette each notched five wins.
