EUGENE, Ore. – Ohio State returns from its west coast trip to host a pair of games, starting with a premier matchup with UCLA on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. and the game will televised nationally on CBS. Ian Eagle and Bill Raftery will call the action.
The game can also be heard on the Ohio State Radio Network from Learfield. Paul Keels and former Buckeye captain Ron Stokes are on the call.
- This will be the second conference meeting between the two programs and the 15th meeting overall. The all-time series is tied up at 7-7.
- Saturday’s game will be just the second meeting all-time in Columbus.
- The last time UCLA came to Columbus was Dec. 6, 1968. That year featured a Top 15 showdown as No. 1 UCLA came away with an 84-73 victory over No. 13 Ohio State. Future hall of famer Lew Alcindor led the Bruins with 19 points and 21 rebounds while Dave Sorenson paced the Buckeyes with a game-high 28 points and six rebounds.
- In last year’s meeting, UCLA jumped-out in the second half and kept the Buckeyes at bay in a 69-61 victory on Bill Walton Day at Pauley Pavilion. Bruce Thornton led the short-handed Buckeyes with 21 points while playing the full 40 minutes. Micah Parrish had 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks while John Mobley Jr. battled the flu to finish with eight points and three steals. Eric Dailey Jr. led the Bruins with 20 points.
- This will be the sixth consecutive game between the teams that is being televised nationally on CBS. Expert analyst Bill Raftery has been on the call for four of the last five contests and the teams are 2-2 in the four games.
- The Buckeyes are coming off a west coast trip that saw them go 1-1, beating Oregon on Thursday night and then falling at Washington on Sunday. Thornton led the Buckeyes, averaging 20.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in the two games. Freshman Amare Bynum averaged 15.0 points in the two games, which included a season-high 20 points against Washington.
- Thornton had a 28-point effort on Sunday vs. Washington where he also went over 1,800 points in his career. He is seventh in program history in scoring and is just six three-pointers away from 200 career threes.
- Christoph Tilly enters Saturday just 13 points away from 1,000 in his career. He also has 40 assists this season, which is seventh-most in a season by a Buckeye center.
- Bynum has started the last six games and is averaging nearly 12 points in those games. His 20-point game at Washington Sunday was a season-best and included a pair of threes and a block.
- UCLA comes into the game off a win at Penn State on Wednesday night to start their trip. Sophomore guard Trent Perry scored 30 points in the win. Tyler Bilodeau leads five Bruins in double figures on the year at 17.7 ppg.
